Google Analytics, one of the most trusted applications on the web when it comes to tracking of data of a blog or website, measures the following metrics for a blog for a particular day-
- Visits
- Page Views
- Pages/ Visit
- Bounce Rate
- Average time on site
- % of new visits.
There are many other aspects too but these are the most relevant things. Webmasters use this data to show the increasing popularity of their blog. The two most important metrics of these are visits and page views. But today, I want to take your attention to something which is completely new for me and I noticed it for the first time few days ago.
Since the day I have installed Analytics in my blog, the bounce rate has rarely gone beyond than 20%. I was amazed to see how it is possible when there are so many better and popular blogs and still their bounce rate is above 50%. I checked traffic reports of many popular bloggers and this is the report.
Below is the screenshot of my traffic report from the day 1 i.e. Jan 1, 2010 – Apr 24, 2010.
Look closely at the following three figures
- Pages/ visit- More than 4
- Bounce rate- Less than 6%
- Average time on site- More than 4 minutes.
Also, I have been consistently scoring at an average of 8 comments/post. If you compare these metrics against those of some popular bloggers, I repeat its SOME, not ALL; I have outscored them!!!
What I concluded after all this is that-
- May be I am not getting huge visits everyday but those who are coming here, they like my content and do not immediately leave my blog. They read content, spend time and comment.
- New visits do not mean that you are popular. What is more important that all who reach your blog anyhow are liking your content and taking out time to have a look. That means you are getting popularity and once you start getting regular visitors, nobody can stop you from becoming a successful blogger.
So, it’s my advice to new bloggers that do not get discouraged easily. TRY TO LOOK AT THINGS IN A DIFFERENT WAY AND YOU WILL FIND A REASON TO GET ENCOURAGED.
Looking forward to comments on how you liked this different approach.

Looks pretty good. But you dont have high traffic. And you visitors are bloggers who read your blog. Try increasing you visitors from SE.

I personally HATE metrics because they can be misleading! However, I sometimes use them because they get me new advertisers! Kind of a “necessary evil”, you see!

and google analytics is a trusted metric
Good post and very true, having munch visitors didn’t mean they like your blog, the most important thing to llok on Google Analytics is the bounce rate, lower is the better! <3
i too think the same
Good research. I always likes to read something like this.
Frankly, I’m observing on my Blog stats everyday. As you said, Quantity of Visitors cannot calculate a blog’s reputation and leads.

the major thing is the bounce rate and page per views…i believe in these 2
I know this thing ever since but surprisingly a lot of bloggers don’t. I think its nice that you discuss it here in your blog to have bloggers become more aware that quantity isnt always the case.

Well your traffic needs to be increased a lot. Concentrate on post titles and descriptions. I’ve seen a 1000 percent increase in my SE traffic due to appropriate post titles and descriptions.

high visit is not the best metric for a blog, peter
Definitely high visit is not the best metric but i consider a good communication system between admin and his readers is must.
I believe in number of comments.
What do u say tushar

comments are a good way of judging the blog’s popularity but maximum of the comments are from the same people who visit your blog regularly….but you get good pageviews from new visits

+1
I agree, bounce rate is a highly overlooked stat when comparing blog stats. What’s the point of having 100,000 visits when 99% of them bounce within a few seconds.
I would trade a small visit stat but a higher engagement through comments and longer page view time.
Thanks for sharing.

well said….i always have taken bounce rate a good area to concentrate on and my efforts are reaping fruits
Tushar , your blog is very cool.
One thing that comes in my mind every time why you have such a small sized texts in your blog posts?
thanks for the appreciation…and for the text part, i am working on a new theme avi…
so that will solve the problem of text size
very impressive…your blog posts are short and straight to the point..could that also be helping keep your stats good?
i think you guys know this better….
Good stat Keep it up. Really its not how far but how well. What is more important in traffic rate is the one that converts. We just don’t need hits but how many of them stay and converts…
Good luck!
Qualitative versus Quantitative, and quality always wins.
I think traffic directly proportional to visitor…more visitor on the more traffic…
Some people just don’t have the time too. Perhaps they came to your blog via Google and found what they needed that instant, then left. Also, those who just go and blog hop are in it for the single comment. In that case, they may just leave after that one comment and it affects your bounce rate. Or maybe they didn’t want to comment, and that also affects your bounce rate.
More visits more traffice it may be usefull or not. But it counts your traffics.
Thanks for this post. It is very useful and time saver.
Thanks for an explanation, the easier, the better
