Companies and organizations across the globe rely on branded websites to drive business and increase a customer base. When choosing a domain name for a business or personal website, there are several important things to one needs to research.

For companies selling multiple products, use the brand name that represents the mission statement of a company. This can be the overall brand name, a combination of minor brands, or a unified word representing a company. It’s best to use a phrase that has been trademarked by a company. Since a website domain will represent a company for consumers, it’s important to use one that people can identify and understand.

Smaller organizations or individuals without a brand should research high-traffic keywords to chose a domain name. Some words or phrases are searched for more often than others: these can be a great way to increase a website’s ranking in search engine results. Optimizing a website for search engine results is called Search Engine Optimization, or SEO.

Using SEO techniques to chose a domain name can be a great way to increase traffic and drive sales. Many major search engines provide free tools that show the popularity of certain search terms. By choosing a domain name that is a combination of high-traffic words, ranking will be increased in search engine results. This will provide free advertisement for a business or organization.

When selecting a domain name, it’s also important to reserve that word or phrase with social media services. Create a company-branded Twitter, Facebook, Myspace, and Blogger account. While a company may not need to use social media websites, reserving the name of a company prevents future trademark issues.

It’s also important to choose a phrase that is simple and easy to remember. Try to keep a website domain address less than 20 characters. Most consumers are unwilling to type a long chain of text into an address bar. Avoid the use of awkward phrases, uncommon lettering, and the mix of letters and numbers. Complexity reduces a consumer’s ability to remember a website domain name, and can reduce future sales.

When registering a domain name, it’s important to register several Top Level Domains (TLD). A TLD is the ending part of a website address. For example, the TLD for http://www.sample.com would be ‘.com’. It’s important for a company to register several TLDs, such as .com, .org, and .biz. Multinational businesses should register the TLD for their respective country. When you register a domain name you look for a Godaddy coupon code online to help you save money.

Before finalizing any domain name choices, search for any potential infringing use. Another businesses or organization may be using the same domain name. If there is a conflict of interest, the individual who registered the domain name first usually retains rights. Litigation can be used to transfer ownership of a trademarked domain name.
