I Just Defeated Hackers

I was out of the town for two days to see my maternal grandmother and when I came back, I got a shock. I am running one other blog in the blogosphere and when today, I tried to log in there, I could not. And very soon I came to know that it is hacked. It was because my username was too obvious and all hackers need to do was to guess my password which was not that long.

I was very sad when this happened. Although my blog was not performing very well but still it was heartbreak for me. I accepted it as a fate and thought that me and my blog has journey till here only.

As my daily routine, I opened some blogs that I read regularly. Harsh Agarwal’s Shoutmeloud is one of them. There was a post written a day before on how to change the default name of the WordPress blog and increase its security. I immediately read the post and changed the username and password of this blog to prevent it from the same fate.

And then something occurred to me. The post said that the default username can be changed through cpanel. I made a guess that if the hackers have not changed the cpanel password of my hacked blog, I could get it back. It was a mild ray of hope but at least I have something to try at.

I logged on to cpanel and immediately changed the username and password using Harsh’s tutorial and logged on to my blog’s dashboard using the changed login details.

BINGO!!!! I have done it. I checked the theme files and realized that hackers have changed the Main Index file of my current theme. I changed the theme and got my blog back. And I managed to defeat the hackers.

This was all because of Harsh’s post. The timing of the post could not have been better. I got my blog back and I am so so happy.
