Email marketing is one of the most important thing that every blogger should focus on. Ask any professional blogger this question – “what was your dumbest mistake”, most of them will end up saying “I didn’t give much importance to build an email list when I started blogging”.

Don’t do the same mistake if you are new to blogging. Start building an email list as soon as possible, here are few email marketing tips for you to help you build and grow your email list.

Email marketing tips for new bloggers

email marketing tips for beginners

1. Give top priority to creating a freebie

I know, for any new blogger it becomes a REALLY hard part to grab others email addresses. Because most new bloggers don’t have much online reputation, so they can’t build an email list as effective as a professional blogger builds.

Here’s a tip for you to quickly build an email list even if you are a new blogger. Spend some time or hire a professional person to create an eBook, video and/or plugin and give that freebie away for FREE on your blogs in exchange of your readers email addresses.

The growth of your email list will depend on how much offer you provide on your freebies. If your freebies offer premium offers, anyone would be interested in collecting them by giving their email addresses to you.

2. Make it easy to subscribe

Don’t ask too much of information when you are asking your visitors emails. You ONLY need their email addresses, why use their contact information etc. which you don’t need?

Remove the barriers in subscribing to your email list, make it dead easy for them to subscribe. You can ask only their email addresses if you want more conversion rates on your email list.

And use attention grabbing CTA’s (call to action) instead of generic CTA’s. For example, you can get more conversion rates on your email list when you use “Download the plugin instantly” instead of using “Submit” buttons.

3. Use optin forms in most visible places

I saw a huge growth on my email list when I placed my freebies on the most visible places on my blog. The conversion rate went so high I was so surprised to see the great results on my list.

The most visible places on your blog to grab email addresses are:

  • Above the fold
  • About page
  • End of the blog posts
  • Footer
  • Top of the sidebar
  • Using a ‘check box’ at the comment section (use AWeber web forms plugin)

The above places are the great resources for you to put your email offers, your readers can’t ignore these places easily.

4. Consider using a landing page

Landing pages are golden if you properly use them. Spend some money and invest quality time on creating landing pages that convert.

How to get more email optin subscriptions from your landing pages?

  • Use compelling headlines
  • Ask less information
  • Use testimonials from the readers or influencers
  • Add social proof
  • Use proper CTA’s
  • Your offer
  • Don’t clutter your landing pages
  • Have one goal a page (to get high conversion rates)

Social proof, using testimonial from other bloggers and your offer play a vital role in bringing more subscribers to your email list. Don’t fake and create testimonials, use the REAL words from the REAL people. Ask your blogging buddies or influencers in your niche to read and give a feedback on your offer. This way you can create genuine impact on others, this makes them to subscribing to your blog sooner or later.

5. Use a better email auto-responder

The email auto responders like AWeber (I personally use and recommend it) will have many features like;

  • Great email newsletters
  • Cute singup forms
  • Easy to manage subscribers in your list
  • Send autoresponder follow ups with ease
  • Track the results
  • High deliverability rate
  • Subscriber segmenting
  • World class customer support etc.

You won’t get these many features in ANY email auto responder, it’s why most professional bloggers use AWeber to build their email lists.

Investing money on building your email list can be a big asset for your blogs in the long run. Because you can’t solely depend on Google to bring traffic to your blog posts or make decent money from organic traffic, right?

Extra tip: Build trust

No matter how much value add to your freebies, or how much you invest on your email marketing campaigns, they all go in vain when you don’t build credibility, trust and loyalty from your readers.

Building trust takes A LOT of time, you can’t expect a thriving community around your blogs within a quick time. You should know how online business works and you should also be testing what NOT works and which tactics will produce better results in the long run.

Always try to engage with your readers through social media sites like Facebook and twitter and use your own blog comment section to regularly stay in touch with your readers.

This might sound like a dumb question but is it worth creating and maintaining a mailing list if you don’t have anything to sell? If you are only looking to keep people informed about the latest posts on your blog?

I created my first mailing list recently and I have offered them a freebie to subscribe in the shape of password protecting my most popular page on my blog, which is a list of all the networks I use to make money with. :)

Hey Rahul great post and you’re absolutely right, many bloggers make the mistake of not starting to build an email list for their blogs, it’s so important. Email marketing can mean more targeted traffic, loyal readers and the ability to convert more prospects into customers. Freebies are always going to be a great incentive for getting people on your email list, and an eBook makes the perfect freebie. Thanks again.
