The #1 purpose of increasing your search traffic is to increase your website sales.

If you are not making sales or income from your website traffic, no matter how much traffic you are getting, it’s all waste. Most people either struggle to increase their search traffic or sales.

Did you know the #1 reason most people fail to increase their traffic and income?

They are not using the long tail keywords.

Now, let’s think for a moment about what makes someone to buy from your site. What most people do when they want to buy something online? They use Google to find more information about the products they want to buy, right?

For instance, if someone is interested in buying an iPhone, they first search for “iPhone reviews” before buying them. Most people use even broader keywords like “iPhone reviews 2019”, “cheap iPhones to buy in Delhi” etc.

The broader the keywords are the more sales you can make from your sites. This is the reason why you need to start using long tail keywords. They not only increase your search traffic but more importantly your overall website sales.

Some bloggers find it really difficult to find the right long tail keywords that increase their search traffic. So in this detailed tutorial we are going to talk about how to do keyword research with Long Tail Pro (LTP). But before we get into the tutorial, let’s first talk about why should you go for LTP over other keyword research tools.

Why should you target long tail keywords?

Let’s think for a moment about what makes someone to buy from your site.

What most people do when they want to buy something online?

They use Google to find more information about the products they want to buy, right?

For instance, if someone is interested in buying an iPhone, they first search for “iPhone reviews” before buying them.

Most people use even broader keywords like

  • “iPhone reviews 2019”
  • “iphone X discount sale”
  • “Apple iPhone offers on Amazon”
  • And the list goes on

As you can see above, all the above listed keywords are “long tail keywords”.

People usually type broad and longer keywords, especially when they are about to make a purchase online.

The broader the keywords are the more sales you can make from your sites.

This is the reason why you need to start using long tail keywords. They not only increase your search traffic but more importantly your overall website sales.

Not only that, 70% of organic traffic goes to long tail keywords.

Here’s the simple step by step tutorial on how to use Long Tail Pro (LTP) for finding highly profitable long tail keywords in any industry.

Step 1: When you’re just getting started with LTP, you need to first add your “First Project and Domain”

By adding your domain, you can get custom keyword recommendations based on the strength of your domain from LTP.

Here’s how it looks like;

demo ltp

As you can see above, getting started with LTP is really easy. Just click on Add Project, give it a name, choose a search engine along with preferred language and you’re done.

Quick note: You can also add your domain and LTP will calculate a keyword competition (a list of all the keywords) that your website should target, based on a number of several metrics from Majestic SEO such as domain flow, trust flow, citation flow, number of referring domains and so on.

Step 2: Once you’ve added your project, you can now start adding “seed keywords” to get hundreds of long tail keyword suggestions.

The #1 tip for finding golden keywords is this: “put yourself in your target audience shoes and see things from their point of view”.

If you start using seed keywords into your keyword research, finding money making keyword phrases becomes easy.

What are seed keywords? As definition, Seed keywords are the words that are to be used as your base keywords.

For instance, if you want to rank for “knife”, instead of directly finding relevant long tail keywords for that seed keyword, think about how your audience might type those terms on Google.

They might use the keywords like;

  • best knifes
  • survival knife
  • best survival knife etc

See, how easy it is for you to come up with a huge list of long tail keywords once you put yourself into your audience shoes?

These are usually known as “seed keywords” – they are really important but that’s where your keyword research not ends, it actually begins with them.

Here’s how it looks like;

ltp new example

As you can see above, you can input your seed keywords based on your niche and website topics and you can also include how many results (or suggestions) you want to get per keyword.

Besides that, you can also set advanced options like min to max monthly searches for the keywords, CPC suggested bid, ad competition etc to further filter your keyword search.

Step 3: Now, based on your filters, LTP will start showing you a ton of long tail keyword suggestions.

Here’s how it looks like;

ltp metrics

As you can see above, for every keyword suggestion, you’ll also get different keyword metrics like;

  • Average KC (Keyword Competitiveness i.e KC is a metric from 0 to100 that indicates how competitive a keyword is)
  • Volume
  • Bid
  • Competition
  • Words
  • Rank Value
  • Language
  • Location

Few Quick Tips to Finding Low Competitive Keywords

Here are a few quick yet powerful tips to use LTP tool to find low competitive keywords.

  • Always use 4 or more keyword phrases when finding long tail keywords. That way you will easily be able to find lots of less competitive keywords.
  • Don’t focus on on broad search terms like “iphones”, “best iphones” etc. You will NEVER rank in top 10 results without putting a lot of ad budget into search short keywords.
  • Always aim for picking the keywords with the local search volume between 100 to 1000. Don’t go beyond 2000 monthly searches. Otherwise it will be difficult for a new blog to rank well for those keywords.

Important: Make sure to find keywords with low to medium KC (keyword competitiveness). This is how LTP recommends you interpret the KC scores in case if you’re wondering.

As you can see above, it’s always better to focus on finding keywords with KC of below 40 to 50 if you want to target low competitive keywords.

  4. Derek says:

    Isn’t Long Tail Pro like $37 a month now??

  5. Deepak Gera says:

    Hi Anil,

    There is always a debate between long tail vs SEMRush, Bloggers which tend to get good profit from SEMRush, recommends SEMRush and rest Long Tail. I mean as of now its all about making money. But personally which tool you see more beneficial and easy to use. SEMRush or Long Tail.

    Or I’d say that for newbies its really hard to spend money on these tools every month so in those cases what would you prefer. Can we get same analytical powers\results using any other tool of less cost or free?

    • Anil Agarwal says:

      Deepak in that case Go for Google Keyword Planner or Keyword.io. One issue I see with free tools is that they are used by everyone. So even if you pick a less competitive keyword using any free tool like Keyword planner, you will still face lots of competition as everyone is picking keywords for their websites and blogs from there. If you can afford, go for premium tools else stick with free tools.
