Here’s how the SEMrush dashboard looks like;

semrush overview domains

From domain overview to keyword overview and backlink analysis, SEMrush offers you an in-depth overview of any domain.

Here’s how the Ahrefs interface looks like;

Ahrefs interface

As you can see above, from Site Explorer to Content Explorer and Keywords Explorer, you can find a ton of data at one place.

Verdict:

When it comes to the overview of dashboard, Ahrefs looks simple and easy to use even for beginners whereas SEMrush takes some time for beginners to get used to it.

SEMrush vs Ahrefs: Which Is Better for Keyword Research?

Most people invest money in paid SEO tools like Ahrefs or SEMrush for finding profitable keywords for their PPC and search campaigns. So let’s talk about the ability to find better keywords using both these tools.

SEMrush for keyword research

SEMrush offers you amazing keyword research tools including “Keyword Magic Tool”.

Here’s how their keyword tool looks like;

keyword tool overview

As you can see above, SEMrush keyword research is offering a wide range of features including;

  • Keyword magic tool
  • Keyword manager
  • Keyword difficulty
  • Organic traffic insights

For now, let’s use their regular keyword research tool.

keyword tool data

As you can see above, for our example keyword “fitness tracker” SEMrush keyword research tool is offering us a ton of data including;

  • Monthly search volume
  • Total number of results (organic)
  • Paid search data including CPC and competition
  • CPC distribution (which is really helpful for paid advertisers)
  • Trend for the keyword
  • Keyword suggestions

SEMrush also gives you a ton of phrase match keywords along with related keyword ideas.

target keywords semrush

So if you’re looking to target phrase match keywords, you can click on View full report to find a list of keywords that contain your “focus keyword phrases”.

Otherwise, you can simply go through their list of related keywords (if you’re searching for LSI keywords in general) to come up with a ton of keyword ideas that are relevant to your primary keyword.

Keyword difficulty: SEMrush keyword tool also lets you easily find out how difficult it is to rank for a particular keyword. Their keyword difficulty score is a percentage from 0 to 100 and the higher the percentage, the more difficult it would be to rank for.

Here’s how it looks like;

kd score semrush

As you can see above, for every keyword, you will see its Difficulty, Volume, Results, Trend and SERP source.

PPC ad research: If you’re looking to find and analyse your competitors ad copies, SEMrush is a great choice. Here’s where SEMrush easily outranks other tools like Ahrefs.

For our example keyword i.e “fitness tracker”, here are the ad copies (which are live updates).

semrush ads

So if you’re looking to invest money in PPC and Google Ads, SEMrush keyword tool gives you a ton of ad copies ideas so you can tweak your ads (titles, meta description) accordingly.

It also offers you Keyword Magic tool where you can find even more useful data.

Keyword Magic tool

If you’re looking to explore niche topics and find semantically related long tail keywords in your niche, Keyword Magic Tool can be a great fit for you.

Ahrefs for keyword research

Ahrefs offers a tool called “Keywords Explorer” for keyword research.

Using Keywords Explorer, you can get thousands of relevant keyword ideas with accurate Search volume, Keyword difficulty score and advanced metrics like Clicks, Return rate and so on.

To start, click on Keywords Explorer and enter any keywords of your choice.

Keywords Explorer ahrefs

You can also pick your desired country (for instance, United States) and click the search button to begin your keyword research.

Keywords Explorer data

As you can see above, you will instantly get a ton of useful keyword data including;

  • Keyword difficulty (KD) score (Under each KD score, you’ll see the estimated number of links from different sites you need to rank on the first page for that particular keyword)
  • Search volume (you can also see global volume which includes searches from all countries)
  • Organic Clicks that are getting for that particular keyword
  • CPC value of the keyword

Quick tip: Check the Keyword Difficulty of any keyword before you decide to target it. Keyword Difficulty estimates how hard it will be to rank in the top 10 for a given keyword. It’s scored on a scale from 0 to 100 (100 being the hardest).

If you want more keyword ideas that are related to your primary keyword, you can choose from one of seven different keyword ideas reports.

Here’s how it looks like;

Keywords Explorer ideas

As you can see above, you’ll find several keyword ideas to mine more keywords. You’ll also find parent topic for your desired keyword. In our example, “Apple watch deals” is the parent topic for our example keyword i.e “apple watch discount”.

Here’s the breakdown of these keyword ideas;

  1. All keyword ideas (includes all terms)
  2. Phrase match (includes phrases that contain your target keyword )
  3. Having the same terms (includes ideas that contain all the terms in your target keyword)
  4. Also rank for (includes keywords the top-ranking pages for your target keyword also rank for)
  5. Search suggestions (includes queries suggested via ‘autocomplete’ when searching for your target keyword)
  6. Newly discovered (includes search queries that were recently added to our database)
  7. Questions(includes queries phrased as a question)

Here’s the list of keyword ideas when you scroll down;

Keywords Explorer parent

When coming up with new keyword ideas, make sure to check the number of clicks for the particular keyword you’re targeting. For example, the keyword “gaming” gets ~140,000 monthly searches, but only 30,000 clicks.

gaming example

But when you take the example of the keyword “gaming music,” it gets nearly 200,000 monthly searches and over 160,000 clicks.

gaming music example

So make sure to focus on finding those keywords that generate more clicks from Google search. That way, you can increase your search traffic even if you’re ranking somewhere in the first page (more search traffic if you’re ranking in top 3 search results).

Verdict:

Both SEMrush and Ahrefs are great tools for keyword research. Ahrefs is great for organic keyword research (which also provides you a ton of useful metrics like clicks, parent topic, keyword ideas etc) whereas SEMrush offers you an all-in-one keyword tool that helps you with both organic content research and PPC ad research.

So if you’re looking to find better keywords for both organic and paid search results, SEMrush should be your choice.

Verdict:

When it comes to backlink analysis, both SEMrush and Ahrefs are great. But here’s the thing: SEMrush offers you an exclusive tool for backlink analysis whereas Ahrefs doesn’t have an exclusive backlink research tool as it comes in-built with their Site Explorer.

Content explorer: Using this feature you can discover the most popular content for any topic that you want. It shows you information about backlinks, organic traffic and social shares of any particular topic you want to know.

You may ask, why should I find the most popular content in my niche?

It doesn’t matter what niche you are in, by knowing the most popular content in your industry, you can easily figure out what kind of content to create to attract more backlinks and social shares.

Here’s where Ahrefs content explorer feature comes into play. For instance, if your topic is “email marketing” and want to find the most popular content around it, this is what the results you get.

content explorer

By seeing the above screenshot, you can easily understand that, this tool helps you easily analyze:

The number of backlinks of the topic you are interested in (along with the number of social shares and backlinks). This information is enough to find and create link worthy content in your niche.

Keyword explorer: One of the simplest ways to increase your overall search engine traffic is to do keyword research.

But finding keywords that are highly competitive in your industry is not going to work. You need to find only those keywords that are easier to rank for and at the same time they should have decent amount of search volume every month.

By analyzing what your competitors are ranking for, you can easily figure out a list of all the keyword ideas that can help you bring more traffic and sales.

Ahrefs keyword explorer helps you do just that. You can brainstorm potential keyword ideas to rank for using their tool. You can also easily check keyword difficulty score so you can filter out all the unwanted keywords.

And realize that each one has its own value.

    Thanks for the great article.

  3. Thanks For sharing the reviews on Ahrefs vs semrush. I have not tried Semrush but I can say Ahrefs tool is best. After reading your blog I am confused about which tool is best for SEO?

    • Preeti give a try to SEMrush as well from the shared 30 days free trial link. Use this tool only for the next 30 days (No Ahrefs) and then decide which is best for you.

  4. Hi Anil,
I have one simple question to you. While exploring keyword like “Top mobile under 15000” on Ahrefs, showing Keyword Difficulty around 20 means low competitive but when the same Keyword is searched on Semrush it is showing Keyword Difficulty of 80. Why there is such a huge difference in results and which result should be considered trustworthy. This is not the single keyword, I have explored some of the other keywords also, in that case, also I found a substantial difference in Keyword Difficulty score. Could you please explain the reason for such difference

  5. A great article over two biggest tool for the Digital Marketing. I have been using these both tools for years but here, I have got few new things.

Thanks again for this great post.

  6. I am also confused to determine which one is better ahref or semrush. Both tools have approximate the same qualities. It depends on what exactly do you want to manage. If you are serious about SEO, you might have to use any one of those or a few in combination. Before reading this I was practically sold on SEMrush. However, after reading this article and the comments from other readers, I’m realizing I shouldn’t be so quick to pull the trigger and that Ahrefs may, in fact, be what I’m looking for.

  7. Mamta says:

    Hello Anil,
Great article. But for a new blogger both are quite expensive. Both cost close to $100 dollar a month. I recently came across Longtailpro and they are offering their pro plan for $295 for 1 year. What is your view of Longtailpro in comparison to Semrush and Ahref? Do you have review of Longtailpro?

  8. Neha Rathi says:

Nice information you have shared about SEMrush vs Ahrefs. Both are also good but I am using SEMrush tool and I’m happy for its lots of features. I think SEMrush is the best SEO tool.

    • Abu Sayed says:

      Dear Neha,

Good Morning, I am wondering actually how do you use SEMrush tool. I also use any one of them. but I want to know what benefit you get from them? is this only to get the Keyword explorer, backlink list, referring domain, competitor keyword analysis? I am very much new in SEO many terminologies I don’t know. My question is if i take the subscription of any one of the seo tools how it will help me? Thanks for your answer.

      Sayed

  9. John says:

Good detailed difference, but there must be a conclusion section where you should provide a recommendation of what you think is the best tool that worked out for you guys.

Anyways going through the comments looks like Semrush is the winner, but you guys must do a conclusion section of this tutorial in case someone just wants to skim and go right to the better choice.

    • Hi John, thanks for the feedback. I’d say go with SEMrush if you want extensive database (it has a ton of databases that provide you a lot of keywords and backlinks data when compared to Ahrefs) and we’re using SEMrush for a long time and also got a lot of better results.. That being said, Ahrefs is not a bad SEO tool either and both these tools have almost similar features at same pricing points. My suggestion is give a try to their free trials once and you’ll judge a tool better that way.

  10. Amit shah says:

It’s a very detailed guide about Ahref tool. I am using ahref for my competitor analysis and its very helpful tool. Thanks for sharing to know more about ahref here

    • Glad to hear that you’re using Ahrefs for competitor analysis. Yes, it’s one of the best tools out there and you might also want to give a try to SEMrush once (as it covers even more countries and databases) and use our 14 day free trial to get started with it.

    • If you’ve gone through the whole post, we have clearly mentioned that we’re using SEMrush for a long time and also got a lot of better results with it (it means, we’re clearly mentioning that SEMrush can be a great choice for bloggers). But that being said, Ahrefs is not a bad tool either. In fact, both these tools have almost similar features with similar pricing plans. First, give a try to SEMrush with our free trial once and you’ll mostly end up using it.

  12. Excellent article. I just recently ordered semrush, but wasn’t sure if I should have purchased Ahrefs instead. Now I feel better about my purchase. Thanks for all the detailed information.

  13. Sarah Sheikh says:

Comparison is Pretty. I am using ahrefs from last 5 years now haven’t tried semrush try yet because can’t have two paid tool. I am thinking to switch from ahrefs to semrush.
Will it be a wise decision?
    Thanks

    • Alex says:

      You should do it

About 1 month ago i bought Ahrefs to check on my links. Now i am not the best or the worst at inline stuff, but i just could not use Ahrefs. Nothing was easy.

I cancelled my account and i joined Semrush. A pleasure to fisaviw bad links and find issues about your website

      Thank uou

  14. pinoy libangan says:

Thanks for sharing this comparison. I like ahref for backlinks and semrush for keyword difficulty

  15. jot cheema says:

    hello anil ,

ahrefs crawl backlinks fast than semrush, and now ahrefs added many new features like internal link checker Which makes it better than semrush, Initially I used semrush but when I used ahrefs, I liked ahrefs more. so my review, ahrefs is amazing seo tool than compared to semrush, and for keyword research keyword finder is also one of the best tool i hope you also will write about keyword finder. And you wrote this article with full information about both tool.

    • Hi Anil, both are great SEO tools I would say because I’ve been using both of them for a long time now. SEMrush offers even more incredible features and their databases are even bigger and regularly get updated when compared to Ahrefs. But as you said, Ahrefs is equally good and I really like their keyword analysis data to be precise when compared to any other tool.

  16. Khai Di says:

Ahrefs has a lot of great features. But I only know how to check backlink and check for rival T.T many indicators I really don’t understand

  17. Dave says:

Great comparison, But I am the fan of semrush tool as it offer wide variety of features. It help me to get the competitors keyword data in no time.

  18. Fouzia says:

Semrush is very superb platform with purity, I personally experienced with SEMrush. Especially it shows genuine and quality base results which becomes a good source of user trust. According to me its good.

    • That’s so true. SEMrush is one of the best SEO tools out there which you can use for doing keyword research, site audits, backlink analysis and what not? It’s definitely the most comprehensive SEO toolkit and there’s no wonder why over 3 million people around the world are using it.

  19. John says:

Personally I am using SEMrush right now and I am much satisfied with this tool but sometimes get irritated because unable to filter backlinks from unique domain perspective. Also, heard much about Ahrefs regarding their awesome features. Also read some views here in this discussion. I think I must try it. What you say Anil?

  20. Sahil Kumar says:

    Hi,

Thanks for the article, really gives some clear insights.I am currently testing out Ahref’s and have tested Moz and Semrush in the past as well. In my opinion Ahref’s UI is the best and clearest. I will have to test Moz and Semrush again i am afraid to be sure which one to start using. Have been using SE Ranking for rank tracking mostly but have noticed rank positions are not accurate most times.

    • That’s so true. There are two things I really love about Ahrefs which is it’s extremely easy to use because of its clean interface and you can easily do any SEO related task include competitor research to backlink analysis to keyword research within minutes. It also gives you accurate data when compared to other tools.

  21. Elan says:

Probably SEMRush is pretty awesome according to my keyword research experience.

  22. Kim says:

Certainly a good article on SEMRush. I personally like Ahrefs because of its familiar user interface. Thanks for posting mate.

    • Hi Kim, I’ve been using both the tools and it’s true that both tools offer exceptional features ranging from keyword research to competitors analysis and so on. Ahrefs keyword metric data is really accurate but SEMrush is the most comprehensive tool where you can also do things like site audit to find and fix your site issues.

  23. keo chà ron magicpro says:

    Hi Anil,

Thanks for this full comparison review .. I personally prefer SemRush, it is My favorite. I also tried Ahrefs, but I think that Semrush is way more useful, quite simple to use and above all, it is user-friendly.

  24. Hi Anil,

I’m currently using SEMrush for my seo tasks and I’m happy for its features. Based from your review I think SEMrush and Afrefs are both great SEO tools. They are both offering reliable and accurate services/results. Also, there are more seo tools try.

    Thanks for sharing. 🙂

  25. sunilkumar says:

I prefer semrush, but sometimes I spend more time on the ahref tool, which also a useful tool for bloggers, thank you for sharing

  26. Alexis mia says:

First thank you sir for sharing your good thoughts with us. This article was great. This very helpful for new and old users of semrush, ahrefs, moz and alternatives. Here you did a comparison between ahrefs and semrush. This one of the best blog for
semrush vs ahrefs comparison . ahrefs is very good for backlink building and semrush is best for other things like competitor analysis.
    Thank you

  27. Allan says:

Appreciate you taking the time to right this post! I’ve heard it’s beneficial to have both as ahrefs is great for backlink building and semrush is better for other things like competitor analysis. Do you feel this is accurate?

  28. Glory Pachnanda says:

I am also confused to determine which one is better ahref or semrush. Both tools have approximate same qualities. According to cost semrush is a little bit cheaper than ahref.

  29. Nikul says:

Very helpful blog. Thanks for sharing important details which distinguish proper difference between ahref and semrush. Thanks indeed.

  30. very good comparison between ahrefs and semrush. I tried to use Semrush for a few days, but I found it easier to use ahrefs instead of semrush interface.

  31. John says:

I tried for free trial on Semrush and I was asked to pay just $1 which I paid and I was signed up successfully. Next day it was again showing me that I am not a pro member. Any body faced such type of issue?

    • SEMrush wouldn’t ask for any $1 trials as far as I know. You should contact their customer staff with the payment once..

      • John says:

Thanks Anil. I have already contacted them and waiting for their reply.

  32. Hi Anil,

Thanks for this full comparison review .. I personally prefer SemRush, it is My favorite. I also tried Ahrefs, but I think that Semrush is way more useful, quite simple to use and above all, it is user-friendly.

    Regards!

    hi Anil
thx for sharin gyour insights 2018, in my eyes arhefs is way more effectiver than semrush.
in 2015 /2016 or afew years back semrush had laregst DB of links , keywords or simply put scraped Data.

Ahref, i love teh most as it is teh most accurate keyword analysis tool, it is fast and provide you with valuable Data , so based on it you acn define your own content staretyg, without propoer planning, and Atcion plan chanecs are the data you download from arefs, would only save on your drive . Define an Action plan and use data in your inbound marketing asap you acn, it is teh only way to succeed. Best of luck

    • Yes, recently Ahrefs is becoming more popular when compared to SEMrush for a lot of reasons. Ahrefs is providing accurate data around keywords so you can easily grab the latest topics with low volume to rank higher. Thanks for the comment.

  34. I say we should buy both SEMRUSH and AHREFS. I saw SEMRUSH as most reliable tools for Website audit and on page analysis and Keyword Research. But for backlink analysis, I don’t this it gives accurate data!

As for AHREFS Best for backlink analysis. Yet too pricey to buy. I think.

    • You don’t really need access to both the tools as either Ahrefs or SEMrush is enough. Just make sure to give a try to both of their free trials and see their features, work on their tools so you’ll know the tools even better.

  35. Nice article about Semrush vs ahrefs.

I am using ahref and this is best.

  36. I have not used SEMrush ever so unclear about this tool. But I usually use Ahrefs. I find that Ahrefs display keyword search results (volume) completely different from Webmaster. Many keywords I find up to 4000 volume. But in fact it is only 2000 volume. Let’s keep this in mind!

    • Ahrefs display keyword search results (volume) completely different from Webmaster and glad to know that you’re able to find up to 4000 volume. I know both of these tools are great and lately hearing great things around Ahrefs, so yea, you can go for it blindly.

  37. Great review. I have used both of them. For Ahref, i used for backlinks and SEMrush for onpage SEO and keywords.!

  38. I find serush and ahrefs are giving two different reports when I searched for backlink for the same website url. I don’t know why this is happening. I like the elegant pattern of reporting of ahrefs. Thank you for your nice comparative study.

    • Both SEMrush and Ahrefs have their own databases and they both have their own set of crawling and systems in place which is the reason why you’ll be getting two different reports. But both the tools offer you almost accurate data around the keywords you’re targeting.

  39. Jasmeet says:

I personally like KW finder comes handy with Keyword research of competitor.
kindly write a comprehensive guide on it.

  40. great article, I like Ahrefs more than semrush. I think that the keyword volume is not accurate in semrush but it seems right in ahrefs. Thanks for sharing articles , With the help of this article, I got to know very well about both of them. 🙂

    • Hi Ranjot, excellent point. I’ve used both of these tools and found out that Ahrefs keyword data is much more accurate when compared to SEMrush. The only thing that makes SEMrush unique is, it gives you access to a wide range of SEO tools that you can use to do everything from keyword research to competitor analysis and so on.

  41. Adam says:

I think that ahrefs has a lot of professional tools from keyword research to competitive analysis etc. I like it more than SEMrush.

    • That’s glad to hear. Lately I’m also hearing that Ahrefs is becoming a better SEO option when compared to SEMrush. Did you give a try to SEMrush?

  42. Shehryar says:

Used to love SEMrush! But since the last few updates, SEMrush has become worst. Just check any site and you’ll see that data isn’t updated from the last 5-6 days, I have registered a complaint today.

They’ll keep asking you to upgrade your plan, I am currently on GURU package and while using their Keyword difficulty tool. After a few searches, they blocked it and kept asking me to upgrade my subscription to Business.

I am looking to move to Ahref.com! Will be applying for a refund soon! Wish me luck with the refunds thanks.

  43. Hi,

I’ve been using Semrush for over two years now and just subscribed with ahrefs. The difference I think is that Semrush is more user-friendly and its site audit is more comprehensive. Thanks for this great article.

    • Even we’re using SEMrush for more than 3 years and extremely happy with the product and all the features that it offers. The great thing is that you can easily track all your website related things from the dashboard as you said, it’s really easy to use than Ahrefs.

  44. usman says:

Wow…you don’t know how long i’ve been confused which tool is best semrush or ahrefs. Finally, I come across this article and it has heaps and heaps of great ways to understand the difference in both tools. Thanks for the awesome resource!
one more thing that ahrefs and semrush tools both are very expensive. Can you please tell us cheap tools which works great like ahrefs and semrush.
    Thanks for the awesome resource!

    • Hi Usman, it’s very common to get pick the best SEO tool because we’ve hundreds of tools at our disposal. Hopefully you might have found the right one among them. But if you’re still looking for cheaper alternatives, I’d recommend you to give a try to tools like LSI Graph, Ubersuggest (free), KW Finder and so on.

  45. Thank you for this article. I have been up in the air about choosing between these two. Seems like through reading most of the reviews that ahrefs has the best banklink content. Trying the trials this month.

  46. Good write up. Thanks for sharing a thorough review of these two great tools. We’ve used SEMrush for years and it keeps getting better.

  47. Its interesting that you overlooked Ahrefs site audit tool. Unlike SEMRush which limits you to 20,000 URLs, Ahrefs can crawl very large websites. Their data explorer is by far the best in the business. SEMRush gives you a list of URLs with issues they want to identify. But no option to customize. Ahrefs, much easier to use and powerful Data Explorer are very powerful indeed.

  48. Personally, I am using Ahref from past 1 year. (Via Flikover) After reading this impressive article, I think I should try SEMrush for long tail keywords.

  49. My favorite is SemRush, I tried Ahrefs too, but I think that Semrush is more user-friendly.
