SEMrush vs Ahrefs: Which Is Better for Keyword Research?

Most people invest money in paid SEO tools like Ahrefs or SEMrush for finding profitable keywords for their PPC and search campaigns. So let’s talk about the ability to find better keywords using both these tools.

SEMrush for keyword research

SEMrush offers you amazing keyword research tools including “Keyword Magic Tool”.

It has over 20 billion keywords and it’s the BIGGEST keyword database.

Here’s how their keyword magic tool looks like;

Keyword Magic tool

As you can see above, it provides you a comprehensive data for most of the keywords. From search volume to questions to related keywords, Keyword Magic Tool is the ultimate tool for keyword research.

If you’re looking to explore niche topics and find semantically related long tail keywords in your niche, Keyword Magic Tool can be a great fit for you.

Besides keyword magic tool, you can also use their regular keyword research tool which looks like this;

keyword tool data

As you can see above, for our example keyword “fitness tracker” SEMrush keyword research tool is offering us a ton of data including;

  • Monthly search volume
  • Total number of results (organic)
  • Paid search data including CPC and competition
  • CPC distribution (which is really helpful for paid advertisers)
  • Trend for the keyword
  • Keyword suggestions

SEMrush also gives you a ton of phrase match keywords and questions along with related keyword ideas.

Have a look;

fitness tracker

So if you’re looking to target phrase match keywords, you can click on View full report to find a list of keywords that contain your “focus keyword phrases”.

Otherwise, you can simply go through their list of related keywords (if you’re searching for LSI keywords in general) to come up with a ton of keyword ideas that are relevant to your primary keyword.

Ad research: If you’re looking to find and analyze ad copies for any keyword, SEMrush is a great choice. Here’s where SEMrush easily outranks other tools like Ahrefs.

For instance, have a look at the ad history for the keyword “email marketing services”.

ad history

As you can see above, you can find the domains along with the ads traffic, estimated traffic price and number of ads keywords.

So if you’re looking to invest money in PPC and Google Ads, SEMrush keyword tool gives you a ton of ad copies ideas so you can tweak your ads (titles, meta description) accordingly.

Ahrefs for keyword research

Ahrefs offers a tool called “Keywords Explorer” for keyword research.

Using Keywords Explorer, you can get thousands of relevant keyword ideas with accurate Search volume, Keyword difficulty score and advanced metrics like Clicks, Return rate and so on.

To start, click on Keywords Explorer and enter any keywords of your choice.

Keywords Explorer ahrefs

You can also pick your desired country (for instance, United States) and click the search button to begin your keyword research.

keyword explorer

As you can see above, you will instantly get a ton of useful keyword data including;

  • Keyword difficulty (KD) score (Under each KD score, you’ll see the estimated number of links from different sites you need to rank on the first page for that particular keyword)
  • Search volume (you can also see global volume which includes searches from all countries)
  • Organic Clicks that are getting for that particular keyword
  • CPC value of the keyword

Quick tip: Check the Keyword Difficulty of any keyword before you decide to target it. Keyword Difficulty estimates how hard it will be to rank in the top 10 for a given keyword. It’s scored on a scale from 0 to 100 (100 being the hardest).

If you want more keyword ideas that are related to your primary keyword, you can choose from one of seven different keyword ideas reports.

Here’s how it looks like;

Keywords Explorer ideas

As you can see above, you’ll find several keyword ideas to mine more keywords. You’ll also find parent topic for your desired keyword. In our example, “Apple watch deals” is the parent topic for our example keyword i.e “apple watch discount”.

Here’s the breakdown of these keyword ideas;

  1. All keyword ideas (includes all terms)
  2. Phrase match (includes phrases that contain your target keyword )
  3. Having the same terms (includes ideas that contain all the terms in your target keyword)
  4. Also rank for (includes keywords the top-ranking pages for your target keyword also rank for)
  5. Search suggestions (includes queries suggested via ‘autocomplete’ when searching for your target keyword)
  6. Newly discovered (includes search queries that were recently added to our database)
  7. Questions(includes queries phrased as a question)

Here’s the list of keyword ideas when you scroll down;

Keywords Explorer parent

When coming up with new keyword ideas, make sure to check the number of clicks for the particular keyword you’re targeting. For example, the keyword “gaming” gets ~140,000 monthly searches, but only 30,000 clicks.

gaming example

But when you take the example of the keyword “gaming music,” it gets nearly 200,000 monthly searches and over 160,000 clicks.

gaming music example

So make sure to focus on finding those keywords that generate more clicks from Google search. That way, you can increase your search traffic even if you’re ranking somewhere in the first page (more search traffic if you’re ranking in top 3 search results).

Verdict:

SEMrush is an excellent tool for keyword research with a huge database, exact volumes, lot’s of keyword variations,  whereas Ahrefs offers a tool that helps you with both organic content research with clickstream based metrics.

Verdict:

When it comes to backlink analysis, both SEMrush and Ahrefs are great. But here’s the thing: SEMrush offers you an exclusive tool for backlink analysis whereas Ahrefs doesn’t have an exclusive backlink research tool as it comes in-built with their Site Explorer.

    Hi Anilji,

I am a new blogger and want to subscribe to an SEO tool but is getting highly confused which one to buy. I can not afford both the tools. Can you please suggest which one to go for? My main problem now is getting quality backlinks from high DA sites. Please suggest. Thanking you in anticipation for a quick reply.

  2. Adam says:

I like ahrefs more than SEMrush

  3. Anil Agarwal says:

You need to register before trying SEMrush 14 days free trial (Their pro version)

  4. Hi Anil, a fantastic post. I would like to know your opinion since in my case I do not have the budget to keep two tools at the same time. I currently use semrush since there are things that I like a lot but I have doubts about the speed of the backlink audit tool. Recently I have encountered a problem in which semrush has not detected backlinks that were potentially dangerous to my website and this has hurt me. This part worries me a little because I’ve already seen the ears of the wolf. On the price-quality ratio of the two tools, would you continue with semrush or would you go to ahrefs? Thank you very much!

    • Anil Agarwal says:

Andrés, I would continue using SEMrush. For keeping track of backlinks of your own website, you can also start using the data which is available in Google Search Console. Google make decision about ranking of a website based on the data we see in Google Search Console.

SEMrush & Ahrefs are really useful when we need to keep a check on our competitor backlinks.

    • Anil Agarwal says:

Hi Andres, sad to know that you’ve not discovered few toxic links using SEMrush. How did you find those toxic links? Have you used any other tool to find them? Also you might want to get in touch with the SEMrush support team and let them know about this issue, so they’ll look into it. But if you still are not comfortable with it, you might want to give a try to Ahrefs for a month or two to really find out the best one among them. I’d suggest you give a try to Ahrefs for some time to see if it’s the right fit for you.

  5. Varun says:

Great Comparison! Really very hard to choose the one. One can try both of them and choose the best suites to them.

  6. Hubert says:

This is a great comparaison and helped me deciding. To me the SEMRush UX is much better but i don’t think it offers as much features or as much quality and quantity of results for specific niche than Ahrefs.

  7. Shiva Mani says:

Ahrefs is love ? in case of finding backlinks of competitors.

  8. Hey, I was a little bit confused that which SEO tool should I use. Then I google and find this article. Your article is really great and now I got my answer and going to buy SEMrush. Thanks 🙂

  9. vaishali says:

I prefer semrush this more effective and best part I like is a competitor analysis.

  10. Hey Anil,
I really love your article and feel blessed seeing it at number 1 in Google. But still, I have an essential question which I want you to answer
I had heard from SEO-Experts that Ahrefs is good for Backlinks building, but SEMrush is excellent when it comes to Site Audit and competitor analysis!
Do you think it is true? Because I had heard it from numbers of experts… Waiting for your answer
    Cheers
    Mukeshwar

    • Anil Agarwal says:

Mukeshwar, that’s true. Nothing comes closer to Ahrefs when it comes to data around backlinks. But SEMrush is really good at Site Audit, Keyword Research and Competitor analysis. But before making the final decision, I would suggest you to give a try to trial versions of both the SEO tools.

  11. subin babu says:

Hello Anil, I personally prefer Ahrefs because am using this tool for last 5 months, due to this tool being able to rank my 2 other blogs on google, anyway thanks for sharing!

  12. I use both, semrush for keyword research and for keeping a track of the rankings. Ahrefs has a better database of links. If I were to use just one, I’d go for semrush, it’s more of
    an all in one tool.

  13. justin says:

Semrush Is better then according to me because its give free access as compare to ahref… and i am using it

  14. Nhom mua says:

I’ve been using Moz for all my projects but I will definitely try out some of the other tools you mentioned.
In the past, I was using mostly free tools but I strongly believe that committing to one paid tool that overall does what is promises is far better. Having said that, no one tool is ideal for all purposes as you outline in your post!

I will be looking forwards to your new blog posts! Thank you very much for putting the time and effort to help us!

  15. Lisa Smith says:

I’ve personally used both of them, They both are good but what I think is that Ahrefs is rich-featured as compared to semrush, Ahrefs is an all in one tool for SEO.

  16. John Doji says:

In my opinion, Ahrefs is way more better than semrush on both updation And Detailed analysis

  17. Pawan Negi says:

I am still confused is there are anyone who use both of these tools. Tell me which one it the best.

    • Anil Agarwal says:

      Hi Pawan

I have used both of the SEO tools in person. I would prefer Ahrefs in case I need detailed data around backlinks, even though SEMrush also has a big backlinks database. But I prefer SEMrush for overall SEO related activities. If I have to purchase only one of them, I would surely go with SEMrush.

  18. Mughal says:

    Amazing Review.
But I think ahrefs is more powerful in crawling web pages. Ahrefs is just amazing.

  19. Carry jhon says:

Without Ahrefs and Semrush you can’t analyze your Competitor.

  20. Hiren Tanna says:

Great comparison buddy, but still confused as both of them have almost similar features.

  21. Tech2Hack says:

Thanks a lot Anil for this helpful comparison, I am using SEMrush for over a month an it’s quite satisfying… 😉

  22. I was ussing Ahrefs. But now I will take the trial from SEMRUSH. Let’s see

  23. ghulam says:

great review, I prefer semrush over ahref and semrush is my personal favorite.

  24. zack says:

its nice post i think Semrush is better one as compare to Ahref because is gives some feature free ….

  25. Steve says:

I personally like Ahref, comes handy with Keyword research of competitor.

  26. Roshan Singh says:

Nice article and very very thanks for the 14 Days free trial of Semrush. I heard of these tools but never used any of them due to their subscription charges and going to use this whose credit goes to your free trail. So, thanks again Anil.

  27. Great information thanks for sharing this article on Thanks for your valuable post… To be really honest to you… ahrefs works perfectly fine for me…

  28. Thanks for your valuable post… To be really honest to you… ahrefs works perfectly fine for me… Have some trouble with Semrush… like it takes little more spam of time to spy competitor website!

  29. Paolo Inzone says:

Great article. Before reading this I was practically sold on SEMrush. However, after reading this article and the comments from other readers, I’m realizing I shouldn’t be so quick to pull the trigger and that Ahrefs may in fact be what I’m looking for. I will most likely do the trial period for both before deciding, but this article definitely opened my eyes to Ahrefs possibly being my best option (instead of SEMrush). Thanks for taking the time to write this article. Great work.

  30. Vikas says:

Ahref is no doubt one of the best tool for backlink analysis..i have never tried semrush but happy with ahref..nice article and the way you have done comparison is really great..thanka

  31. Hi, thank you for your sharing, I am a new comer. I would like to use both of them first then I will decide which one is the one for me.

  32. suwash singh says:

Excellent review, I prefer ahrefs over semrush because it crawls webpages more faster than semrush.Ahrefs is my personal favorite.Great Post But I love Ahrefs Never use semrush but will try now
    Thanks

  33. Zesshan says:

Great Post But I love Ahrefs 🙂 Never use semrush but will try now 😀
    Thanks 🙂

  34. Vic says:

I thought I was the only one confused between these two tools. I wasn’t sure which SEO tools to use and whether I should prioritize Ahrefs over Semrush or the other way around. I know they have different features. When it comes to keyword research, Semrush is better, but for backlink analysis, it’s Ahrefs. This comparison helped me decide which one to get. Thanks for the article! The comments above also helped me in my decision.

  35. Jitender says:

Excellent review, I prefer ahrefs over semrush because it crawls webpages more faster than semrush.Ahrefs is my personal favorite.

  36. Saurabh says:

Great comparison thanks. Can you please also provide comparison of Seoprofiler.

    • Anil Agarwal says:

Saurabh you are interested in comparison of Seoprofiler with SEMrush or Ahrefs?

  37. Warsidi says:

It’s an excellent comparison. As a free user, I use both of them. In combination with Google Keyword Planner. the insights are amazing. In my opinion, however, Ahrefs is still the best among the two.

  38. Johan says:

Thanks for a great article. I use both in trial right now. Have not decided yet which one I should pick.
I get the feeling that the SEMRush data isn’t always correct. I know I have backlinks – Ahrefs shows that I have backlinks- but SEMRush can not find any backlinks. May be me, may be them… just a feeling. 😉

  39. Jasa Web semarang says:

Both semrush and ahrefs have great values and features. But I think semrush are more powerful because the data are real time and accurate.

    Just my opinion.

  40. ajeet says:

Semrush looks best for me.Good for finding keywords your competitor is ranking for…

  41. Eric Ritter says:

Great comparison of the two tools. Personally, I’m still on the fence and testing out both SEO tools.

  42. Tim says:

SEMrush still offers free trials without credit cards – you need to contact them to get set up

  43. Rich Coffman says:

I have a subscription to both and have used many other SEO platforms. Ahrefs has the most extensive backlink index. It is Stronger than SEM’s data and Moz’s OSE.

  44. Sona says:

Organic research tool of Ahrefs doesn’t really work great, but recently i saw some changes, so hopefully issues are fixed. But for organic traffic SimilarWeb id good, sometimes I cannot afford so I use SEMrush :D.
Ahrefs as a backlink checker is excellent. Both are great tools

  45. Rathnareddy says:

i read many article on different website about semrush vs ahrefs but i am not get clear clarity on after reading your post i get some clarity i like your article writing style thank you

  46. Jennish says:

It depends on What exactly do you want to manage. If you are serious about SEO, you might have to use any one of those or a few in combination. There are other SEO tools as well that you may want to check and compare – SEOsuite, SEOprofiler, WebCEO to name a few.

  47. Rudra Ramya Sree says:

    Hi Anil.

  48. tejas says:

great comparison for all who are thinking either to use ahref or semrush. really helpful article

  49. SEMrush is very effective………………….

  50. Aroos says:

    Great comparison. Thanks 🙂

Semrush (View More) now requires subscription although a few weeks ago it used to be free.

    • Anil Agarwal says:

Aroos you can use https://bloggerspassion.com/recommended/semrush link to try SEMrush Pro version valued at $47 free of cost for the next 14 days.

      • naveen says:

        hi

the CPC for a particular keyword shows different values. for example, for–

best web hosting for seo—- semrush shows cpc as $0 whereas ahref shows $35

so now which one to choose thanks

        naveen

        • Anil Agarwal says:

Hi Naveen, that’s what happens with most of the SEO tools. You simply can’t trust one SEO tool but when it comes to keyword data, make sure to get information from as many tools as possible. That’s how you can get an idea of metrics like CPC, search volume etc. I personally use both SEMrush, Ahrefs for such things.
