5 Best Ahrefs Alternatives That Solves Its SEO Issues (Tested)

VERIFIED BY Yash Jain
READ TIME 11 min read

It’s been 6 months since I started using Ahrefs alongside. Ahrefs has a larger keyword and links database, which is why I opted for it. And it is perfect like Semrush.

I faced a couple of serious issues, so we should look for different SEO tools.

Is there a 100% free alternative to Ahrefs?

No, most free tools have usage limits. To get rid of those restrictions, you eventually have to get a paid subscription. That’s just the reality of it.

Unignorable Problems I Faced in Ahrefs:

I even discussed these problems in a review, but let me quickly tell you what’s wrong here.

Recently, I’ve noticed that Ahrefs’ competitive analysis data, like organic clicks, isn’t matching up. I even compared my site’s Ahrefs data with Google Search Console, and there were some noticeable discrepancies.

Another thing I’m really not a fan of is their Usage-Based Credit system. It feels like credits are being burned for every minor task.

I’m just opening a report or applying a quick filter, and Ahrefs consumes credits like nothing.

I know Ahrefs is established as an industry leader, but burning through credits at this rate isn’t sustainable for users. I’m also frustrated that unused monthly credits don’t roll over to the next month.

My team has grown recently. With two SEO experts on board, we naturally need to access the tool from multiple devices.

However, the platform is extremely restrictive with logins, even if we manually terminate active sessions. It feels like a calculated move to force us into buying extra seats we don’t actually need.

For me, these are the serious issues.

Because of these issues and the major disadvantages I’ve run into, I’ve put together a list of selected alternatives for you to consider. And yes, some of them are much more budget-friendly.

    1. Semrush – Best AI Powered SEO Alternative Tool

In my findings, Semrush seems to be a perfect alternative to Ahrefs because it offers 55+ tools in one place, and the pricing is almost similar.

Compared to Ahrefs, Semrush has equally bigger databases for keyword and backlink research. More importantly, accuracy matters. Semrush provides data that looks much closer to what the Google Search Console shows.

I wasn’t a fan of their plan structure in the past, but they’ve recently reorganized their features into specific toolkits.

This is a much better approach because it allows you to pay only for the features you actually need. For example, the Semrush One toolkit makes the most sense for most users since it bundles core SEO features with newer AI capabilities.

    semrush toolkits

It’s also worth noting that Semrush transitioned into a fully AI-powered platform back in 2025. They introduced features like AI brand presence tracking.

    ai visibility

Currently, my team is heavily focused on improving our visibility across LLM platforms like ChatGPT and Gemini. Semrush makes this possible out of the box, whereas Ahrefs typically requires a separate add-on for similar features.

Beyond that, Semrush doesn’t throttle you with a restrictive credit system, and their team management setup feels much fairer.

You also get access to historical data dating back to 2012. This is incredibly helpful when you need to audit a domain’s link history. Such data depth that Ahrefs simply doesn’t match.

Even with the basic plan, I get daily keyword ranking updates from Semrush, so I can act immediately if I see a traffic drop.

On the other hand, Ahrefs charges an extra fee per project if I want daily keyword rankings, which is expensive.

    rank tracking

However, if you only need a tool for daily rank tracking, you might opt for cheaper alternatives, such as SE Ranking.

Overall, you’d pick Semrush over Ahrefs if you’re looking for an SEO tool that offers the most feature set in the market.

Don’t get confused about their different toolkits. Just remember, if you’re looking to have AI visibility features along with the core SEO features, you need to subscribe to their Semrush One toolkit.

I never advise you to swipe your credit card directly. Instead, just use Semrush for 14 days and understand if it works for you or not.

    2. Moz – Best for In-Depth Backlink Analysis

    LimitationDaily Rank Tracking is Absent

Moz is a classic SEO tool launched in 2004 and is still working. The link building capabilities of Moz are really powerful, and a lot of experts in the industry seem to trust their insights in the same department over any other tool.

I recently had the opportunity to work with Moz on a live project. Compared to both Semrush and Ahrefs, the Moz user interface is significantly cleaner and much easier to navigate.

When you use Moz, you’ll notice it has a more focused set of features, but every one of them is actually functional and helpful.

For instance, in the Moz keyword research report, I found a unique metric called “Minimum DA.”

This is a game-changer because it helps me quickly identify the minimum Domain Authority a site needs to realistically rank for a specific keyword.

    keyword overview report

In many ways, I find this more practical than the standard Keyword Difficulty (KD) metrics you see in Ahrefs or Semrush.

If we talk about Moz evolution, well, it is criticized a lot, but I guess they are alive again and now bring AI features into the tool as well.

Moz is also helpful if your site’s rankings have been hit by low-quality or unwanted links. While writing this, I’ve been navigating a traffic drop that started in early 2026, and I suspect spammy links are the primary culprit.

The Spam Score feature in Moz is a lifesaver here. With one click, it identifies the percentage of toxic links on your site. Instead of making you hunt for them manually, it highlights the most problematic ones so you can simply add them to your Google disavow file.

    spam score assessment

I managed to remove the toxic links percentage from 80% to 9.2% with the help of Moz.

Overall, Moz is a good alternative SEO tool if you just want core SEO features in your toolkit. The entry is easy, as it just requires $39/month. You can start with their 7-day trial risk-free.

    3. SE Ranking – Affordable Ahrefs Alternative

    SE Ranking
Key Benefits Over Ahrefs:Advanced Rank Tracking
Key FeaturesAI Visibility Tracker, AI Mode Tracker, 188 Country Database
    Free Trial14 Days
    Free PlanNot Available
    Starting Price$103.20/month
    LimitationShorter Link & Keyword Database

SE Ranking is another good alternative for those who are seeking to save their pocket. It is a very generous tool, and customers loved it, including me for their transparency, fair pricing, and core features.

If you look closely, you’ll see that SE Ranking is truly at its best when it comes to tracking and reporting. Although it does include all the core SEO features you need to get the job done.

But let’s get back to the tracking.

SE Ranking offers a variety of tracking options. And they’ve now introduced AI tracking into the mix.

By combining this with standard keyword tracking, you get extra perks like AI Mode tracking, AI Visibility tracking, ChatGPT tracking, and AI Overviews (SGE) tracking.

Compared to Ahrefs or other tools, I’ve found their rank tracking to be significantly more advanced. Specifically, I can track any keyword and see its daily fluctuations over the last 30 days, all in a single view.

ranking of keywords fluctuates over time

This is particularly beneficial for me because if I want to see which top competitors were ranking for a specific keyword last month (or even earlier) but have since dropped off, I can easily pinpoint them with SE Ranking.

It helps me understand exactly which competitors Google is pushing to the top and which ones are losing their grip.

    serp history for a keyword

If you use SE Ranking over the long term, you’ll realize just how much you can save on feature usage costs.

For example, on their entry-level plan ($103.20/mo), you can track 2,000 keywords and 100 AI Prompts daily. On Ahrefs, a similar keyword volume would cost you $249/month, and even then, you’d only be able to track 20 AI prompts.

And yes, there is no credit system in SE Ranking as well. You can fetch and export unlimited reports.

So overall, if you are seeking a budget friendly advanced SEO tool in the market, SE Ranking is the only good option.

    4. Mangools – Best for SEO Beginners With No Prior Experience

    mangools seo tool
    Key Benefits Over Ahrefs:Simplicity
Key FeaturesKeyword Research, SERP Analysis, Rank Tracking, Backlink, Site Analysis, Prompts Monitoring
    Free Trial10 Days
    Free PlanNo
    Starting Price$24.50/mo
    LimitationShorter Database

Mangools have always been a personal favorite of mine. Honestly, I have a special place in my heart for this tool. The reason? Its simplicity.

I always recommend this small SEO tool to new website owners who haven’t tried one before. They have all the core features, but the tools are not advanced-level. Please keep this in mind.

For example, they have a keyword research tool that provides enough keywords for a new site, but it also doesn’t offer the large dataset that might be a limitation for high-traffic sites.

I really like how Mangools did the cost-cutting for newbies.

For anyone entering the industry on a tight budget who still needs a solid list of keywords, backlink research, and a clear domain overview, there is simply no better alternative than Mangools.

Yes, it is an SEO tool with a smaller database, but it can still get your job done.

When I tested it for Keyword Research, I found 300+ suggestions for a seed keyword “Learn SEO”. In Ahrefs, there are more suggestions. But if it works for you, then you’re going to save more with Mangools than any other tool I mentioned.

For more details, you can check out my in-depth Mangools review.

Overall, if you are a newbie and looking to try your first SEO tool, then Mangools is a great option to start with. It has almost all the features that a small site owner is looking for.

If you wish to try, then a 10-day trial is available at Mangools.

Do remember, Mangools’ starter plans are just $24.50, and you get 500 Prompts to monitor across the top LLM tools at the same time. No other SEO tool is as fair as Mangools.

    5. UberSuggest – Cheapest Keyword Research Tool

    ubersuggest
    Key Benefits Over Ahrefs:Money saving
Key FeaturesRank Tracking, Site Audit, Keyword Research, Link History, AI Search visibility
    Free Trial7 Days
    Free PlanYes, with basic limits
    Starting Price$122 (Lifetime)
    LimitationLack of Advanced Features

I came across a lot of SEO tools in my life. Only Ubersuggest offers lifetime plans. But there is a catch.

I don’t think it is suitable for those who are looking for a complete SEO tool. Instead, it works best for Keyword Research needs.

If you examine their plans closely, you’ll notice that they offer decent limits for keyword research, but the rank tracking is fairly restricted. It allows you to track only 125–300 keywords.

Compared to Ahrefs, the Keyword and Links database is short here. Still, if those are starting or their niche is small, then I think Ubersuggest has a lot of keyword suggestions to offer.

My main reason for sharing this alternative was to provide you with an option that works as a one-time investment rather than a recurring monthly expense.

    My Recommendation for YOU!

I’ve been using Semrush for almost everything. It is equally powerful as Ahrefs and perfect for those who are interested in the complete SEO suite

SE Ranking is budget-friendly and yet comprehensive. The tracking capabilities are top-notch.

But I am not forcing you to get subscribed to them. First, carefully check and analyze your needs.

No matter which tool you use, it is best to test the trial first.
