Did you know that 90% of SEO is all about links? Link building is the surefire way to increase your overall search engine traffic.

It doesn’t matter whether you are trying to increase your traffic for a new blog or established blog, you need to build lots of quality links.

What is Ethical Link Building?

Before talking about ethical link building, we’ll first talk about the backlinks.

Backlinks are simply hyper text links from other websites that link to your websites. Backlinks are generally built from blog posts, videos, infographics, tweets, social shares, comments etc.

Link building is the process of generating backlinks for your websites which help you increase your search engine traffic.

Backlinks are generally considered as votes in search engine eyes, so the more links your website have the more rewards you can get.

Generally all links are considered as equal but few of the links are considered as “epic links” that come from authority sites, .edu, .gov sites etc.

These epic links usually boost your search rankings and increase your domain authority almost in no time thus giving you more organic traffic.

Ethical link building is the process of building backlinks without performing any black hat SEO techniques. All the links are built in a natural way thus giving you more search traffic and better SERP results for your websites.

In simple terms, ethical link building is the process of getting LEGIT backlinks from other websites. It can also be considered as safe SEO link building process to increase your overall links and rankings.

Why is Link Building Important?

Optimizing your website is an ongoing task. You simply can’t say you can drive unlimited traffic from search engines after implementing few SEO strategies.

SEO is changing after every update from Google. So you need to be ready for every Google update and go accordingly to the changes. But the only thing in SEO that doesn’t change is “link building”.

Few common SEO link building mistakes to avoid

  • Don’t use optimized anchor text in links
  • Quality matters over quantity
  • Don’t create links only to home page: Most beginners use their guest post links to their home pages. This can be considered as spam by Google bots and results in penalizing your sites in SERP results. So make sure you’re giving equal importance to your inner pages as well while building links to your sites.

It’s all about links

If you are looking for ways to boost your website traffic, then you need to build quality links. If you’ve a new website, without having good links from other blogs, it’s almost impossible to rank for any keyword because there’s a lot of competition out there.

I know, building an email list is essential if you want to grow your traffic and sales, but you also need to implementing few proven link building strategies if you want more traffic from search engines.

Focus on deep linking instead of linking only to your home page. While it’s tempting to link to your home pages from your guest posts or other link building sources, but it’s extremely important that most of your links should go to your internal pages. This is often called “deep linking”.

Deep linking is the most effective way to increase your website overall reputation in search engine results and it can increase your domain and page authority as well.

9 Advanced link building strategies

So in this advanced link building techniques guide, we’ll talk about few powerful link building tactics to build quality backlinks. Let’s get started without further ado.

1. Broken link building

Who else wants to build quality links to their websites using a creative yet most effective way?

Discover broken links on other sites in your niche and request those links! It sounds so easy, right? Yes, finding and fixing broken links on other sites is the best link building technique.

Tools like Xenu link sleuth can help you easily discover the broken links on any site. Although it takes time to find the broken links on a site (and most top blogs already focus on their dead links, so it’s not an easy task). However you can still use this strategy to build quality links.

The process is simple.

Step 1: find the broken links on a relevant site in your niche

Step 2: email the blogger about each broken link you discover

Step 3: once they respond, ask them to link to one of your relevant post or page

I know, the above 3-step process sounds really easy. Let’s get into the details on how you can use this process.

Step 1: How to find broken links of your competitor blogs?

You can simply use Google search to find hundreds of broken links of any site in your niche.

Here’s how to do it.

Go to Google and type a keyword (relevant to your blog’s topic) by including inurl:links

Here’s a simple example.

If you’re blogging related to SEO, you can use this simple Google search “SEO inurl:links” (use it without quotes) and set search settings to 100 results per page.

Use SImple Google Results bookmarklet to get results in plain list format.

Now, you need to clear all the URL’s that are duplicate. You can use Ontolo’s Remove Duplicate tool to remove all the duplicate links. Once you’re done with this, you can now use Screaming Frog SEO Spider tool to find all the broken links from your list.

Once you’ve the list of broken links on other sites in your niche, you can now email them about their broken links.

Here are few tools that will help you find the broken links easily. Use anyone of them, I personally prefer Screaming Frog.

Screaming Frog SEO Spider tool: This SEO Spider is a small desktop program that crawls websites links, images, CSS, script and apps from an SEO perspective. It helps you find broken and dead links on any site easily and it’s a free tool too.

Xenu’s Link Sleuth: Xenu’s link sleuth is the most effective tool to find broken links on a site. This tool helps you check websites for broken links. It checks not only the normal links but also style sheets, scripts, frames, local image maps links, etc. And the best thing is it’s a free tool!

Here are few more rocking features of this tool

  • Simple user-interface
  • Can re-check broken links (useful for temporary network errors)
  • Simple report format, can also be e-mailed
  • Executable file smaller than 1MB
  • Supports SSL websites (“https:// “)
  • Partial testing of ftp, gopher and mail URLs
  • Detects and reports redirected URLs

Step 2: email the blogger about broken links

You can use a simple email subject such as “Broken Links On Your Site” and give links to the page where you found the broken links.

Hey (first name),

I was checking out your site today and noticed that a few links weren’t working on this page: (page with broken links)

These two pages that you linked to don’t seem to exist anymore:

  • (broken link #1)
  • (broken link #2)

If you need a replacement resource, I saw this post last week and thought it was awesome:

(your page).

Hope that helps and keep up the awesome work with the blog!

Your name

Step 3: Requesting those links

Now you’re on the final and the most important step of the broken link building method. You’ve now discovered and emailed the blog owner about the broken links on their blogs.

Now, you just need to suggest your link as a replacement. It’s as simple as that.

2. Relationship based link building

Whether you know it or not, email outreach is the most powerful way to get incoming links from top blogs in your niche. We all know how important it is to build high quality backlinks.

But it’s extremely difficult to get top bloggers attention to link to your blog posts.

Here’s where blogger outreach comes into play. You need to build a connection with other top bloggers in your niche before asking them for a favor or link!

When it comes to relationship building, I mostly admire the skills of Alexa from Groove. He not only shares everything his journey to $500K monthly on his startup blog, but he also shares how he uses guest blogging to reach over 1 million people.

Here’s a detailed guide explaining how to connect with other bloggers in your niche to build high quality backlinks to your sites.

3. Content gap SEO link building

Have you ever heard of skyscraper technique? It’s the latest link building technique coined by Brian Dean from Backlinko.

Using this link building strategy, you can easily attract tons of visitors, shares and links to your blog posts. This is a 3 step process and here it how this strategy works.

  • Find Top Performing Content Related To Your Niche: You can use tools like Topsy to find high performing contents in your niche.
  • Create Better Content (Make Something Even Better to The Existing Content): This is the crucial step, once you find out the link worthy content in your niche, you need to create content that is more detailed and epic to the original source.
  • Reach Out to The People And Ask Them To Link To Your Content: This is the final step, you simply have to reach out to people who shared the original piece of content.

Here’s a great case study by Brian Dean who increased his search traffic by 110% in just 14 days using skyscraper technique.

4. Infographics are link magnets!

When asked Brian Dean his favorite link building strategy, without any hesitation he said – Infographics.

Infographics act like magnets when it comes to link building. Here’s how to use Infographics to start attracting natural backlinks from other blogs.

Research the kind of content that is naturally get linked by other bloggers in your niche (you can do this by doing a simple Google search by entering your target keywords).

Ignore all the results from authority sites like Wall Street Journal, Huffington post, Mashable etc because they already have huge DA and a lot of ranking advantage.

Your focus should be on finding pages that are created by average bloggers like you and me (because that’s the content every blogger is linking to).

Now, look for the opportunity. Find out whether the post is outdated, need more details or attractive design. And start creating Infographics to start attracting links.

5. Harness the power of guest posts

Instead of using your guest posts to build links, consider guest posting as relationship building. Use your guest posts to create more value to the readers in your niche.

Write detailed guest posts and frequently link to other bloggers who have high quality articles. Once you link to them, email them saying you’ve linked from one of your guest posts.

This not only helps you boost your online presence but it also strengthens the bonding with other bloggers. Once you have good relationships with other bloggers, it becomes easier for you to get links from them.

After all, no one links to a stranger, right?

If done right, guest blogging is still one of the most powerful link building strategies to attract high quality links from your niche.

6. Don’t use the same anchor text, keep variety in it

Gone are the days when we were able to enjoy top rankings on Google by getting some exact anchor text link for targeted pages of our website.

If you are building lots of backlinks to your website using the same anchor text, you are inviting Google to place an over optimization penalty on your website.

You need to keep lots of variety among the anchor text you use for getting backlinks for your website to make sure these links look natural to Google.

When people are linking to your website naturally, they can use anything as anchor text against your website URL. They can even use Click Here, Read More or anything that comes to their mind. So you need to keep lots of diversity in your anchor text.

Suppose I want to rank page for blogging tips keyword, I may use anchor texts like blogging tips, blog tips, blogging tips for beginners, Blogging Tips from Anil Agarwal, Blog Tips on Bloggers Passion, Read More about blogging tips, Visit here, and so on….

7. Create an authority website in your niche

This is very important step when it comes about building high quality backlinks for your website in Google panda and penguin age. You should just publish high quality, well researched and comprehensive contents on your website.

If people are finding your website contents useful, there is every chance they will start linking to your website automatically. This way you will end up getting lots of editorial links for your website. You will not need to ask anyone to link to your website manually.

Since I’m working in blogging and SEO niche for some time. There are some trusted and authority websites in blogging and seo niche that gets lots of editorial links automatically primarily because of their content quality.

Some of websites and blogs in these niches I myself love linking to are,,,,,, Matt Cutts blog,, Digital Inspiration,, and

8. Interview blogging experts in your industry

Interviewing experts in your niche can be the most effective way to get quality backlinks to your websites.

This is the evergreen way of building links even in Google panda and penguin era. Find out the authority bloggers in your industry, ask them if they are interested in getting featured on your websites and you are good to go.

Here are few tips on how to conduct expert interviews to build backlinks.

  • Get to know about the person you want to interview so that you won’t end up asking silly/irrelevant questions.
  • Make your questions short, relevant and to the point. And ask limited questions, don’t piss them off by asking 15 to 20 questions, chances are they end up giving you one line answers. As a rule of thumb, anything around 6 to 10 questions seem legit.
  • Email the bloggers who you have interviewed, once the interview goes live, ask them to link or share your posts. The chances are either they will link to their “Press pages”, “Featured Here” pages or they will share with their fans and followers. If their readers love your interviews, they may link to your posts as well. So it’s a win/win approach that helps you connect with the influencers while building links the natural way.
  • You can also email other blogging peers, your blogging buddies to link to your interview posts, if they really like your interview series, they will definitely link.

9. Start commenting on other blogs

You need to make a list of active and most popular blogs in your niche and don’t think much about whether you will be getting a dofollow or nofollow link by commenting on these blogs.

This practice will be highly effective if you are running a link building campaign for fresh new website.

You should have an exact idea about a blog post before commenting on it. Don’t write one liner comments but try to add more value to a blog post through your knowledge sharing comments.

If you happen to the first commenter on a blog post on popular blog in your niche, may even be able to send some targeted traffic to your website very quickly.

You should avoid submitting comments on blogs where your comments get approved in no time. It means those blog owners are not much worried about content quality and have no moderation in place.

So you should target those blogs only where your comments are kept in moderation before actual approval or disapproval by its blog owner.

  20. Ricky Figueroa says:

Anil, great article I must say. Most bloggers are stuck in SEO practices that USED to work in the past (they don’t work now), and strategic and smart link building is one of the few SEO techniques that is ever-green.

Also, all SEO strategies are long-term when it comes to ranking on Google, but if done right, it still can generate traffic pretty fast. Now, I always say… before anyone start going crazy with SEO or any other traffic strategies… they MUST focus on optimizing their blogs for higher opt-in and sales conversions.

That is something most bloggers overlook, and then, they get stuck wondering why are they getting so much traffic but no conversions. Conversions is a by-product of a strategic process, and traffic is the last thing in that process.

Unfortunately, most bloggers focus on the wrong things for a long time, which is why most are struggling.

Anyways… GOOD STUFF in here, man.
