Exploring WPX: What Changed After Switching

I had a bad experience with my previous hosting, which is the main reason to write this review.

It’s been a while since I moved to WPX, and if I think hard, I still remember these main problems I had with my previous host:

• Performance Issues (Related with down time & slow speed)
• Security issues (This was a major problem)
• Customer support issues (I had received a helpless support service)

So how does WPX hosting resolve my issues? What are the good and bad of WPX?

WPX Hosting Performance Insights: They Promised 99.95% Uptime, But Do They Maintain It?

My website is hitting more than a million users every year. And there are times when sudden traffic hits.

Surely, the uptime of my previous host was fine, but its load-handling capacity was quite poor, which caused my site to crash several times.

Honestly speaking, I give too much importance to my website speed. Before WPX, it usually took nearly 3 seconds to load.

Sudden Traffic Test:

The real efficiency of a web hosting service can only be determined by the “stress test”. 

The stress test is nothing but a test where a tool like k6 sends automated bulk traffic from various locations across the world to the website at the same time.

These test results are especially useful for eCommerce websites, where sudden increases in traffic are more likely to happen.

In just 5 minutes, My WPX site server handled a total of 26k requests during the load test, with the highest load occurring within that short time.

Even with the spike in traffic, the performance remained consistently good, with an average response time of just 62 ms.

No errors were encountered during the test.

Seeing such quick response times reassures me that WPX can handle sudden increases in traffic without any problems. The servers stayed up throughout the test, showing their reliability.

Built-In CDN & Global Reach (41 XDN Points)

Do you know what the main reason behind WPX Hosting’s fast performance is?

The answer is: that WPX has its own CDN (Content Delivery Network) built-in, which is included in all plans. You don’t have to pay extra for this.

Although WPX’s data centers are only located in 3 major locations: Chicago (USA), Sydney (AU), and London (UK).

You might think that having fewer data centers means you might not get good reach. But that’s not the case at all.

Because WPX has XDN points spread across 41+ locations worldwide, the cache is stored and delivered from the nearest one when a website is loaded.

Before WPX, I only had 2-4 data centers to choose from. But WPX completely transformed the landscape. Having 41+ XDN Points is a significant upgrade, and the number keeps growing.

If your website’s serving a global audience, you’ll see a big improvement with the WPX Cloud environment as WPX Hosting internal tests show improvements from 50% to 320%, depending on the website configuration and resources.

WPX retained automated backups for 28 Days in their system.

In my previous host, there was only a manual backup service available, and I usually took manual backups once a month.

In today’s time, if your site is large and undergoes changes and updates on a daily basis, having a daily automated backup facility is essential.

The first thing I don’t like about WPX is their staging setup conditions.

You can quickly deploy your website to a staging environment with just one click, but there are some conditions you need to be aware of:

1. WPX treats the staging site as a separate user site, which will use up one slot from your available plan.
2. The size of your databases should be less than 1 GB.
3. The size of your website files should be less than 5 GB.
4. The staging site will occupy disk space from your hosting storage.

Only if your site meets these conditions, you will be able to set up a staging site.

Migration to WPX is a Simple Task

These days, some companies charge for providing migration assistance, while others don’t.

Fortunately, WPX offers a free migration service.

If you are a fan of cPanel type web hosting interface, then sorry WPX is not offering a cPanel.

Instead, they have their own custom built user interface.

Upon reviewing the user interface, I must rate it 4.7/5 for its ease of use. You won’t face an issue in managing WPX hosting settings.

The only drawback I found in their user interface is the absence of a “search” option.

1.) Setup or configuring a new account in WPX is a simple process.

All you have to do is purchase a plan and send a request for migration. The WPX agents will handle the domain transfer, website migration, WordPress installation, SSL setup, and other necessary tasks for you. 

2.) Upon logging in to your account, one can see the list of active hosting and domains on the WPX hosting.

3.) Tracking how much resources your site has consumed is a simple task. All you have to do is tap on the “Show Usages” button.

4.) Adding a subdomain or setting up a staging environment is also a one click task.

5.) Access to most common hosting tools like Backups & Recovery, File manager, WPX CDN, Databases is always available at the left sticky sidebar. Because of this, users won’t have to remember the tabs.

WPX customer support service is available 24/7/365 via tickets, e-mails, and Live Chat.

After performance & security, The need for quality customer support is the BIG reason behind my switch to a new web host (WPX).

Since 2016 until now, I’ve contacted WPX customer support countless times, and they always reply to me within 1 minute.

No Auto Scaling or Real-Time Billing (Important Limitation)

Well, as you may know, WPX has some limitations on resources, meaning even in their high-end plans, you can’t scale up beyond 60 GB of storage.

In case your site experiences a sudden need for bandwidth, SSD storage, or RAM, you’ll have to manually upgrade your plan. Otherwise, you won’t be allocated extra resources.

WPX doesn’t support automated scaling, and this could be a problem for news websites or large eCommerce sites where requirements of extra resources occur anytime. 

Furthermore, downscaling isn’t possible with WPX. Services like Cloudways follow a pattern of resource allocation where users can save a significant amount of money based on real-time billing usage.

For example, my site currently uses 85 GB of bandwidth, but I’m paying for 400 GB of monthly bandwidth. So, even if I have leftover resources at the end of the month, I still pay for the full 400 GB.
