The main highlights are their bigger link database and Mozโ€™s own developed Domain Authority (DA) trusted by known SEO experts. All the core SEO features are available, but keep in mind that keyword tracking is updated weekly not daily. Overall, a good SEO tool for beginners to growing sites.

We all love Moz DA and Spam Score. But is the whole tool worth it? Moz Keywords database is small, but is it a problem in reality?

Weโ€™ll cover all this stuff today.

I have been using Moz for a few months on my live site. I have focused more on the problems in the review. The goal of this review is to reveal hidden insights of Moz with all of you so that youโ€™ll make a wise decision.

In 2013, SEOmoz rebranded to Moz and expanded its product offerings to include tools for link building, keyword research, and site auditing.

In 2026, they are headed to bring AI features into their system. (Weโ€™ll discuss those features today)

Moz offers easy-to-use tools to help SEOs of all kinds. Its primary audience includes;

My Experience With Moz (Start to Finish)

Ease of Use:

Mozโ€™s user interface is simple and user-friendly, offering a dashboard where I can access various SEO tools. 

Its interface provides simple navigation, including features such as keyword research, link analysis, site audits, and rank tracking.

Hereโ€™s what its interface looks like;

As shown above, I can find all the Moz tools from the left sidebar, neatly organized in a user-friendly interface.ย 

My favorite part is the main home dashboard. 

It lets you start your day with a quick snapshot of your siteโ€™s health without having to dig into Mozโ€™s more complex reports. 

As soon as I open Moz.com, I can see my site’s DA, Search Visibility, and exactly how many keywords have moved up or down. 

Although there are shortcuts to various tools right there, I usually find myself focusing on that top-level info.

Initially, going through all the features that Moz offers, like keyword research, site audits, and backlink analysis, may seem challenging. 

But Moz provides a ton of free tutorials, guides, and webinars that help beginners effectively use their tools.

If I need any help with their tools, I can email them using this contact form. However, they donโ€™t offer a live chat feature or phone support.


Keyword Research:

Moz makes the whole keyword research process really simple. There are so many different ways to find the right keywords for your content.

If you just want to check the metrics for one specific keyword, I think their Keyword Explorer report is the best way to visualize the data. 

You can quickly scan through the overview and find everything you need, like Keyword Difficulty (KD), monthly volume, and a full SERP analysis.

One unique feature I really love is that Moz Pro lets you see the minimum Domain Authority (DA) currently ranking for a keyword. 

DA is the metric officially created by Moz. Other tools copied their concept, but SEO experts, including Brian Dean, Neil Patel, and Will Critchlow, trusted it the most.

Honestly, I think this is even more important than the standard KD score. It gives you a clear reality check: Is your site’s DA high enough to actually compete for that spot?ย 

If you pick your keywords based on this “DA metric,” your chances of ranking on the first page are much higher.

Moz is also one of the few tools that lets you analyze keyword data across 50+ different countries. Even a giant like Semrush feels a bit behind in this specific area.

If you want to find the total keywords a particular page is ranking for, then it is also possible through their โ€œExplore by Siteโ€ tool.

Itโ€™s like opening up the Google Search Console data of any competitor URL. Very helpful i must say.

Their Keyword Gap tool is great for spotting the keywords your competitors are ranking for that youโ€™ve completely missed. 

In the suggestion tool, I usually get about 1,000 to 1,500 keyword ideas for most topics, though it can be a bit limited if you’re looking into very rare or niche subjects.

Finally, in this new era of AI Overviews, the “Organic CTR” metric is a lifesaver. It shows you the actual percentage of clicks you can expect, even if you rank in the top positions.ย 

I personally never target keywords with a low CTR. Itโ€™s just not worth the effort, and Moz makes it easy to filter those out.

Compared to tools like Ahrefs or Semrush, Moz’s keyword database is less comprehensive regarding competitor insights like CPC value, but its keyword suggestions are good enough for most people.ย

Overall, Mozโ€™s Keyword Research tool helps me identify relevant keywords that are easy to rank for. Also, it simplifies the keyword research process by NOT overwhelming me with unnecessary data.


AI Powered Tools:

Like almost every other SEO tool on the market, Moz is heading in the direction of AI. However, it’s important to note that Mozโ€™s AI features are still currently in the Beta stage.

I decided to put them to the test to see how they actually perform.

The first tool, named โ€œAI Content Brief,โ€ lies under the Keyword Research department.

You provide a seed keyword, and the tool generates a content structure or outline for your article based on that term.

I found this tool a bit underwhelming. The outline it produced felt like it was pulled straight from ChatGPT without any specific prompt guidelines or fine-tuning. It came across as very generic and robotic. Most importantly, the headings didn’t really address the actual, real-world questions that humans are asking about the topic. It lacked that “human-first” touch that is so important for SEO today.

AI Research:

Moz also allows you to track your brand presence across top AI models, including ChatGPT and Gemini.

You can set up a tracking for AI prompts related to your niche and analyze if your brand is appearing in the ChatGPT responses.

When I plugged my own brand, BloggersPassion,” into their Prompt Suggestion dashboard, Moz showed me a list of all the prompts where my brand name was being cited by LLM models.

I see a lot of question based prompts. If I make sure to answer those specific questions clearly on my siteโ€™s “About Us” page, thereโ€™s a much better chance that these AI models will pull and supply the correct information to users.

I am not giving my final comments as Moz AI tools are still in the beta stage, and you can expect some powerful features like โ€œAI Competitor Visibility Analysisโ€ in the near future.


Rank Tracking:

Rank tracking is at the heart of any SEO tool, and with Moz, you can monitor up to 3,000 keywords.

There is a dedicated dashboard just for your rankings.

When you open it up, the top section gives you a quick summary of your performance over the last week.

It is showing you exactly how many keywords moved up or down, along with your overall search visibility percentage.

I really like how simple Moz has kept the interface. As you scroll down, you can see your current rankings and exactly how much theyโ€™ve fluctuated. A great bonus is that you can also monitor how your competitors’ rankings are moving for those same keywords.

It also shows how many of your keywords appear in featured snippets. But the AI Overview tracking is absent.

One of my favorite parts of the ranking section is the SERP Features dashboard. Itโ€™s a great way to quickly see which of your keywords are appearing in different kinds of snippets.

Moz tracks almost every type of snippet out there, but there is a catch: AI Overview tracking is currently missing.

Overall, the Moz Rank Tracking system works for most of the users except those who are looking for daily rank updates. Unlike some tools that offer daily tracking, Moz only updates your keyword rankings once a week.

And as of now, you can only enable rank tracking for your national location. These are the considerations you have to keep in mind while using the Moz Rank tracking system.


Competitor Research:

Moz has a dedicated tab just for competitive research. After using it for a while, Iโ€™ve found it really useful, even though the interface looks a bit basic at first glance.

Basically, it just compares your domain to your selected top 3 competitors and gives you keyword gap data.

This analysis helped me spot several keywords I had completely missed in my own content. My competitors were using them to pull in a lot of traffic.

Sometimes, you just need to know exactly which competitor pages are outranking yours. Being able to find the top organic keywords for any page and adding them to your own strategy is a huge win.ย 

To do this, youโ€™ll want to dive into Mozโ€™s Top Competing Content tab.

One thing I found really “intelligent” about Mozโ€™s approach is that you donโ€™t have to manually hunt for competitors. Their Rivalry metrics tell you exactly who your top competitors are, so you can start your analysis the right way.

I personally hate guesswork when I’m planning an SEO strategy, and kudos to Mozโ€”it keeps me from having to guess.


Domain Overview:

The Domain Overview is easily one of my favorite and most-used reports in any SEO tool.

Iโ€™m glad to see that Moz has a solid version of this. 

Whenever I come across a new competitor, the first thing I do is plug their domain or page URL here. With just one click, I get a full breakdown of their metrics like DA, PA, link profile, top keywords, and a list of their main competitors.

One metric I found here that feels a bit different is the “Domain Search Theme.” Basically, it analyzes your siteโ€™s profile to tell you what your primary topic actually looks like to a search engine.

If the theme Moz shows is different from the core topics you think youโ€™re covering, itโ€™s a sign that your site is drifting off-course.

This is a huge SEO red flag. Covering too many unrelated topics can actually lead to a Google penalty, as mentioned in their latest spam policies. Itโ€™s a great way to make sure you’re staying in your niche.

The next important metric Moz gave me is Brand Authority, which simply lets me know how popular my Brand has become in the internet world.ย

Spam Score:

Do you remember the last time you used the disavow tool to clear out toxic links? I make it a point to do this at least once a month to keep my site protected.

Iโ€™ve found Mozโ€™s “Spam Score” tool to be a bit different. Honestly, it is better than most other SEO tools.ย 

Instead of overwhelming you with data, Moz gives you a simple percentage of your toxic link ratio. If you see that red graph start to grow, you know itโ€™s time to take quick action.

I actually put this to the test recently. Over the last year, my site has picked up a lot of spammy links. After using Moz to identify and remove them, I managed to bring my spammy link ratio down from a massive 80% to just 9.2%. Thanks to Moz!

I really like that Moz points you directly to the problem domains rather than just listing thousands of individual links. 

Other tools often give you a huge list where the same spammy domain is repeated hundreds of times. Moz filters that noise out for you. 

It gives you a clean list of spammy domains that you can simply paste into Googleโ€™s disavow tool to instantly clean up your link profile. Itโ€™s a huge time-saver.


Link Explorer:

Link analysis is really the heart of what Moz does. If your work involves tasks like link building and outreach, youโ€™re going to find this tool incredibly helpful.

In fact, my team often finds more link opportunities here than in other tools like Semrush. The reason is pretty simple: Mozโ€™s link database is massive. It currently sits at 45.5 trillion links and is growing every day.

When I enter my top competitor โ€œDemandSageโ€ profile into their Link Explorer, it gives 29k referral domains as compared to Semrush, which gives only 22k. More profiles mean more opportunities for Link outreaching.


Quick Page Optimization:

When a page is sitting around the 10th position, it usually just needs a few small tweaks to climb higher. For this, I mostly rely on the “Page Optimization” tool.

This feature gives you a straightforward on-page SEO audit, showing you exactly what is missing or where you can improve. For example, I had a page that used to score between 70 and 80. 

After I implemented the suggestions provided by Moz, my score improved significantly. In terms of results, that page is now ranking on the first page of Google.

One reason these on-page suggestions are so effective is that they are rooted in the expertise of Rand Fishkin, who is a legendary figure in the SEO world. You can definitely trust their insights.


Site Crawls & Audits:

To be honest, I rarely follow SEO audit suggestions blindly, except for the technical ones. Itโ€™s almost never the case that every single recommendation in an audit is 100% accurate or absolutely necessary to follow. That said, itโ€™s still a good habit to keep an eye on them.

Moz has a dedicated audit system that automatically crawls your site every week. It looks for all the typical issues like meta tags, crawling errors, duplicate content, and redirection problems. Personally, I find the technical reports much more useful than the content-related ones.

Not Just Problems, But Solutions.

One thing I like about Moz compared to other tools is that it doesn’t just point out a problem; it actually tells you how to fix it.

For example, it flagged some duplicate content on my site and suggested adding a rel=canonical tag, which was exactly the right solution for that specific issue.

Overall, I think Mozโ€™s Site Audit is solid. I wouldnโ€™t say you should rely on it for every little thing. Itโ€™s definitely worth checking once a week to catch those small errors and technical tweaks that keep your site running smoothly.

Pros:

  • Since Moz has a larger link database, youโ€™re much more likely to find a higher number of referring domains for your competitors. This gives you a massive advantage when you’re planning your outreach strategy.
  • Unlike most tools that just show “Difficulty,” Moz shows the Minimum Domain Authority currently ranking on Page 1. For a new site, this is the most honest way to tell if you actually have a chance to rank.
  • Moz DAโ€™s metric is the most authentic and trusted by industry experts. You can rely on it for sure.
  • The Brand Authority score and Domain Search Theme help you stay focused. As an entrepreneur, this prevents “niche violation” and ensures Google sees you as an expert in your specific field.
  • Adding extra users or campaigns is much cheaper than the competition.
  • Accurate rank tracking.
  • For support, Moz offers hundreds of free SEO guides, tutorials, and videos on how to use their platform.
  • Provides you with 24-hour online support.
  • Friendly user interface that its rivals.

Cons:

  • With only 1.25 billion keywords (compared to 20B+ in other tools), you will likely miss out on “long-tail” or niche keyword opportunities that your competitors might find elsewhere.
  • Waiting a full week to see if your rankings dropped is frustrating. Moz should offer daily rank tracking.
  • Moz does not provide organic traffic estimates for competitors. You can see their keywords and links, but you canโ€™t see a “graph” of their growth or total visits.
  • The tool finds 5,000 keyword suggestions, but you can often only view or export 1,000.
  • It cannot find broken outbound links. This is a basic SEO hygiene factor that most other tools include.

Moz Pricing: Fair or Not?

You can really see the affordability in Mozโ€™s pricing as their plans start at just $39. Their top two rivals offer expensive plans – Semrush ($117.33/month), Ahrefs ($129/month)

But there is a catch.

I subscribed to their โ€œMedium Planโ€ as my friend, and I shared the same access and added around 5 sites. But you donโ€™t have to.ย 

You can start with their โ€œStandardโ€ plan, as their โ€œStarterโ€ plan feels insufficient. It doesnโ€™t have a backlink analysis tool. Yes, that’s the disadvantage for the users who are looking to start with as little money as possible.

Their plans are divided based on the usage limits of the features. One can add up to 1500 keywords for tracking in their plan, and so on.

Although Moz is a great tool, itโ€™s NOT for everyone. Here are TWO of the best Moz alternatives with their pros and cons.

I would consider Semrush as the BEST alternative to Moz for two reasons;

  • Semrush offers over 55 tools, including content marketing, PPC analysis, and SEO.ย 
  • It also has a more extensive database for backlinks and keyword tracking.

The main downside of Semrush compared to Moz is its pricing, with plans starting at $129.95 per month. On the other hand, Moz Pro is more affordable, with its basic plan starting at just $39 per month.
