What Is Affiliate Marketing? Guide to How It Works in 2026

Affiliate marketing is a billion-dollar industry and an excellent choice for generating passive income.

We have been doing affiliate marketing for over a decade now, and our blog currently generates over $15,000 per month from it.

So we know what works and what does not.

If you are new to affiliate marketing and looking for an ultimate free guide, this post is a treat for you.

We will cover everything from what affiliate marketing is to how affiliates get paid, to the best niches to go after in 2026, and more.

Letโ€™s quickly get started!

What is Affiliate Marketing?

Affiliate marketing is a performance-based model where you earn a commission by promoting other companiesโ€™ products or services.

In simple words, you promote a product or a service on your platform, and when your audience/customer clicks on your link and makes a purchase, you get a specific amount of commission for each sale.

All you need to do is sign up for an affiliate program and get a unique affiliate link for the product or service you want to promote. Then promote it on your blog, channel, or social media and earn a commission every time someone makes a purchase through your link.

To explain this in a simple example,

We promote Semrush (an SEO tool) on our website by offering helpful guides. So when someone clicks on our affiliate link and buys a subscription, we earn a commission in return.

Here is a short glimpse of our earnings via the Semrush affiliate program:

You see, this high earning potential makes affiliate marketing one of the best ways to make online money.

Here’s who can become an affiliate marketer:

  • Bloggers
  • YouTubers
  • Social media influencers
  • Newsletter creators
  • Website owners
  • Even complete beginners with zero experience

In short, to become an affiliate marketer, you do not need to create or launch your own product or handle any shipping. Instead, your only job is to connect the right people with the right products.

How Do Affiliate Marketers Get Paid?

Affiliate marketers earn money by promoting products or services through unique tracking links. When someone clicks their affiliate link and completes an action like making a purchase, signing up for a free trial, or even just clicking the ad, the affiliate earns a commission.

How Do Affiliate Marketers Get Paid

The process is simple: promote โ†’ generate traffic โ†’ drive conversions โ†’ get paid.

Well, this is the basic step. Usually, most of the affiliate marketers go with a website or a YouTube channel to promote the products.

Here are a few ways you can get paid by using affiliate marketing:

  • Blog posts and product reviews
  • Video tutorials and unboxings
  • Comparison guides (X vs Y)
  • Email newsletters
  • Social media posts
  • Deal and coupon posts

But here’s the thing. Not all affiliate programs pay you the same way. There are different payment models.

Take a look at the payment models used in affiliate marketing:

1. Pay-Per-Sale (PPS)

The pay-per-sale model is the most common payment model seen in the affiliate industry. It means that when someone clicks on your link and makes a purchase, you get a commission.

That means, you bring a potential lead, and when the lead converts, then only you get to earn the commission.

Most affiliate programs, including Amazon Associates and Semrush, use this model.

2. Pay-Per-Lead (PPL)

Now, here, you earn a commission when a visitor completes a specific action. This includes something like signing up for a free trial, filling out a form, or subscribing to a newsletter.

There is no purchase required to get the commission. All you need to do is send the leads you have gained to the company, and thatโ€™s it. You get a commission.

This works really well if you have a targeted email list or a blog with engaged readers.

3. Pay-Per-Click (PPC)

This one is the next scenario. I mean, you literally get paid by clicks by just advertising products/services on your blog.

In simple words, when you promote a product or a service on your blog, and someone even just clicks on the link, you earn a commission.

It doesnโ€™t matter if they buy anything or complete the purchase. This model is not usually used by most of the sites, but if your blog has good traffic, then this model works really well.

4. Recurring Commissions

This one is everyoneโ€™s favorite. Recurring commissions mean you can earn commissions as long as the user is subscribed to the product or service through your link.

With recurring affiliate programs, you earn a commission not just once but every month as long as the customer stays subscribed to the product.

This is my personal favorite. Because with just one successful conversion, we get to earn again and again without worrying about anything.

How Much Commission Do You Earn in Affiliate Marketing?

Well, this is the question where we all get stuck as beginners. Naturally, we would want to know if affiliate marketing commission is good enough or not.

My honest answer? It depends.

The fact is, the commission on any affiliate program varies a lot. It mostly depends on the niche you pick and the product you are going to join. Many times, it also varies depending on the program you are going to join.

So, there is no fixed commission rate in this industry.

But here is a general idea of what you can expect:

  • Digital products and SaaS tools pay you the highest commissions. Here you can expect between 20% to 50% per sale. Sometimes even higher.
  • Physical products pay much lower commissions, typically between 1% to 10%.
  • Finance & Insurance also pays the highest flat rate commissions. A single lead or sale can earn you anywhere from $50 to $200 or more.

Here’s a quick reference table:

NicheTypical Commission Rate
SaaS & Software20% to 50% (often recurring)
Online Courses20% to 70%
Web Hosting$50 to $200+ per sale
Finance & Insurance$50 to $200 per lead/sale
Physical Products1% to 10%
Health & Supplements10% to 30%
Travel3% to 12%

Types of Affiliate Marketing Programs

Well, get this – it is not necessary that everyone does affiliate marketing in the same way. There are a few types of affiliate marketing, and each works differently based on your platform, content style, and most importantly, your audience.

Here are the 5 types that actually work in 2026:

1. Content-Based Affiliate Marketing (Blogging/Product Review Sites)

This is the most popular type and the one we personally use at BloggersPassion. Blogging is the simplest and easiest way to reach target people and gain sales.

To do so, you can simply build a blog or a website and start publishing relevant content about the product you are going to affiliate with. Make sure to include comparison guides, tutorials, and reviews suggesting that you have used this product.

This way, readers naturally buy through your links, and you earn commissions.

The best part? A single article can keep earning for years. We have blog posts from 2018 that still generate over $500 a month in 2026. Google keeps sending traffic, and the commissions keep coming in.

2. Influencer and Social Media Affiliate Marketing

Influencer and social media affiliate marketing is another way by which you can do affiliate marketing. Here you can use your following on social platforms like Instagram, TikTok, YouTube Shorts, or Threads to promote products you genuinely like.

All you need to do is create engaging videos or posts, include your affiliate link, and earn a commission every time someone buys through it.

TikTok Shop and Instagram Shops have made this even easier because people can now buy directly without leaving the app.

3. Coupon and Deal-Site Affiliate Marketing

Here, you run a website that lists discount codes, cashback offers, and flash sale deals. When visitors use your codes to make a purchase, you earn a commission.

4. SaaS and Service Affiliate Marketing

This is one of the highest-paying types of affiliate marketing. Same as content-based affiliate marketing, here you focus on promoting software tools and online services. For instance, you can promote tools like Semrush, Hostinger, or ConvertKit.

One plus side with these types of programs is that users stay subscribed for months, and you can earn commission for each month.  That means you earn recurring commissions every month as long as the customer keeps their subscription.

5. E-commerce and Dropshipping Affiliate Marketing

Now, with this model, you promote products from online stores like Amazon, Etsy, or Shopify stores. When someone buys through your affiliate link, you earn a percentage of the sale.

And this, too, without ever handling inventory or shipping.

Commission rates typically range from 10% to 30%, depending on the store and product category.

6. Email Marketing Affiliate Programs

This one is often underrated. You build an email list, send out helpful newsletters, and include affiliate links for products your subscribers would genuinely find useful. When they click and buy, you earn a commission.

How to Start Affiliate Marketing in 2026?

Now, as a beginner, many get stuck at this point. Many get confused about where exactly they should start as a beginner.

How to Start Affiliate Marketing in 2026

Well, worry not. I am here to guide you with this process.

First of all, you do not even need a huge budget or years of experience to do this and get started.

All you need is a clear, step-by-step plan of action and consistency to follow the right path.

And this might look overwhelming at first, but trust me, it is a lot easier than you think.

So, here are short steps that you are going to follow to set up everything in 2026:

Step 1: Pick a Suitable (Profitable) Niche

As I said earlier, picking the right niche is the most important decision for you to make. Because everything depends on your niche.

So, to quickly explain, pick a niche that is profitable and less competitive. Avoid going too broad.

If you are still not coming to a conclusion, here are a few questions you can ask yourself to get clarity when picking a niche:

  • Do you have a genuine interest or knowledge in this topic?
  • Are people actively spending money in this niche?
  • Are there affiliate programs with decent commission rates?
  • Can you create better content than what already exists?

If yes, you are good to go with the niche. But you get stuck, start again from zero again. Because this step will decide how well you will earn in your affiliate marketing.

Step 2: Start a Blog or YouTube Channel

Alright, you have picked your niche, now the fun begins! It is time to set up a blog or website where you will promote your affiliate products.

If you are just starting out, a blog is honestly your best bet. Blog posts hang around on Google and keep pulling in traffic for years.

No joke, but we have got posts from 2018 that are still making over $500 a month in 2026.

Pretty sweet, right?

To start a blog, you need three things:

  • A domain name
  • A web hosting plan (Hostinger is a great option for beginners)
  • WordPress (free and beginner-friendly)

And let me tell you this, it will take only 30 minutes to set up everything.

If you prefer video over writing, no worries! YouTube channel works just as great for affiliate marketing. Pick whatever feels natural to you and run with it!

Step 3: Join the Right Affiliate Programs

A great place to start is with the tools and products you are already using!

Chances are, some of them have their own affiliate programs, so go ahead and check that out first. You never know, you might get the highest clicks based on your experience that you share as a review.

You can also sign up for affiliate networks like ShareASale, Impact, or Amazon Associates to discover tons of programs that fit right into your niche.

Speaking of networks, here are some popular ones where you can find hundreds of products to promote:

  • Commission Junction
  • Clickbank
  • Amazon
  • eBay
  • Awin
  • Impact

No matter your niche, you can use the above platforms to find best-selling products. The commission will vary from niche to niche.

If you are looking for more, here is a HUGE list of 100+ best affiliate programs you can promote as a blogger.

Step 4: Create Content That Converts

Affiliate marketing is all about TRUST.

And the best way to earn that trust? Educate your audience about the products you are recommending.

This is where content marketing becomes your best friend. Our blog pulls in over $15K a month, and honestly, it is all thanks to content. We truly believe in it, which is why we pour so much energy into creating free guides and tutorials for our readers.

When you consistently give people useful, informative content for free, you naturally become the go-to expert in your niche.

Now, some content types just work really well for affiliate marketing:

  • Product reviews (honest, based on real experience)
  • Comparison posts
  • Best of roundups like “Best tools for beginners.”
  • Step-by-step how-to tutorials

One golden rule? Always try a product before you review it. Your readers are smarter than you think. They can instantly tell the difference between a genuine recommendation and a lazy copy-paste review. Keep it real, and they will keep coming back!

Step 5: Drive traffic

Last but not least, you need LOTS of traffic.

Traffic = Money

No matter how good your content is or how many products you promote, youโ€™ll not get any sales if you donโ€™t have traffic.

The difference between successful marketers and the rest is the amount of traffic they get.

So, how do you get more traffic? Our top tip is to use SEO (Search engine optimization).

Here are a few quick SEO tips to increase traffic to your affiliate website.

  • Find relevant long-tail keywords for every post or review you create. Make sure there is NOT too much competition for the keywords. Do not go for broad keywords (like โ€œfitness appsโ€). Go for long-tail keywords like โ€œfitness apps for college studentsโ€, as they are easier to rank for.
  • Use a keyword tool. We use the Semrush keyword magic tool as it has a huge database of 25+ billion keywords. You can also try free tools like Ubersuggest, KeywordTool.io, etc.
  • Optimize your posts for your target keywords. Include your keywords in the title, meta description, images, subheadings, etc.

Best Affiliate Marketing Tools to Start With?

Now that you have an idea about affiliate marketing, you need to understand the next step.

If you are setting up a blog, you are definitely going to need a few tools to set everything up.

Without tools, you will not be able to do affiliate marketing. So, below I am mentioning some of the tools that I have been using for a long time, and it’s best if you are just starting your journey.

1. Semrush (Keyword Research and SEO)

Pros And Cons of Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate marketing is not a perfect business model.

! There are some genuinely awesome advantages that make it one of the best ways to earn money online, but there are also a few drawbacks you should know about before jumping in.

Let’s break it down honestly.

Pros:

  • You do the marketing for others. No need to create your own product.
  • Very minimal startup costs. (be it for launching a website or a YouTube channel to promote products)
  • There are thousands of products and services to promote.
  • Performance-based commission (the more you sell, the more you earn).
  • No earnings cap. The sky is the limit to your earnings, as most affiliate programs donโ€™t put a cap on your earnings.
  • Promote multiple products as you go.
  • No customer support responsibilities to take care of.

Cons:

  • There is a  huge competition, as many other people are trying to promote the same products that you are.
  • It takes time to see results.
  • You are fully dependent on traffic. You must constantly generate traffic (visitors) to your affiliate products to make money.
  • Sometimes, delayed payments might irritate you.

Is Affiliate Marketing Still Worth It in 2026?

This is one of the most common questions we get from beginners. And honestly, it is a fair question.

The short answer is yes. Affiliate marketing is still very much worth it in 2026.

Here is why.

The Numbers Don’t Lie.

The global affiliate marketing industry is worth over $17 billion in 2026, and it is still growing.

More than 80% of brands worldwide run an affiliate program. That means there are thousands of products and services you can promote across almost every niche imaginable.

We started BloggersPassion over a decade ago, and in the early days, we were making just a few hundred dollars a month from affiliate marketing. Fast forward to today, and our blog brings in over $15,000 per month and the majority of that comes from affiliate commissions.

And here is the thing: the strategies that worked five years ago? They still work today. SEO-driven content, honest product reviews, email marketing, and building genuine trust with your audience, none of that has gone anywhere.

What has changed is that the tools available to help you do all of this are now faster, smarter, and more powerful than ever before.

So, yes, affiliate marketing is still worth it in 2026, but only if you approach it the right way. Treat it like a real business, put your audience’s needs first, and the income will naturally follow.

Tips For Successful Affiliate Marketing in 2026

If you ask me, what does it need to be successful in affiliate marketing in 2026?? Well, my answer is simple, all you need is consistency and dedication.

If you stay consistent and offer value that is necessary to your audience, consider it is going to be successful.

Here are the tips that have helped us grow BloggersPassion to over $15,000 per month in affiliate income:

1. Only promote those products that you have actually used:

Before you recommend any product, use it yourself. Know its features, its strengths, and its weaknesses.

We have promoted Semrush for years because we use it every single day. That personal experience is what makes our content convert. Generic reviews do not build trust. Honest, experience-based reviews do.

2. Focus on 2 to 3 Products, Not 20

If you try to promote too many products at once, know that it is not going to work. And this is the biggest mistake beginners make.

Instead, pick 2 to 3 products in your niche and go deep on them. The more focused your content is, the faster Google sees you as an authority on that product, and the more your commissions grow.

3. Be Patient and Stay Consistent

Most people quit within the first 3 to 6 months because they are not seeing results fast enough. That is the worst time to quit because that is exactly when things start to pick up.

So stay patient and consistent, even if you are not seeing any results. Just do your work patiently and honestly, and you will see the results in no time.

4. Learn Basic SEO and Keep Updating Your Content

You do not need to become an SEO expert. But you do need to know the basics.

Also, do not ignore your old content. Go back every 6 to 12 months and update your older posts with fresh information. Some of our best-performing affiliate posts today are ones we originally wrote years ago and have kept updated ever since.

What are FTC Disclosure & Legal Requirements in Affiliate Marketing?

This is something most beginner guides completely skip. And that is a big mistake.

If you are doing affiliate marketing, you are legally required to disclose that you earn a commission from the products you recommend.

This is not optional. It is the law.

The FTC (Federal Trade Commission) in the United States requires all affiliate marketers to clearly tell their audience when they have a financial relationship with a brand or product they are promoting.

In simple terms: if you are getting paid to recommend something, your readers need to know about it.

But why does this matter?

Two reasons.

First, it is the law. Violating FTC guidelines can result in serious penalties and fines. It is not worth the risk.

Second, it builds trust. Readers respect honesty. When you’re upfront about earning a commission, it actually makes people MORE likely to trust your recommendations, not less.

So yes, it is important. It just takes 10 minutes to set up properly, and this protects you for the long run. So do not skip this step.

Final Thoughts

To wrap up, affiliate marketing is one of the best ways to make passive income online in 2026.

We have been promoting affiliate products for 10+ years and make a living from affiliate marketing. Soโ€ฆ yes, it is the BEST choice for beginners to make money online.

If you are just getting started, focus on one niche, promote products you have actually used, and keep creating helpful content. That is really all it takes.

  1. Great article about affiliate marketing for beginners! It’s well-written and informative, and it covers all the essential topics. I especially appreciate the tips on how to choose a niche, find the right products to promote and build an audience.

  2. Hi Anil,

I like your post. Definitely, affiliate marketing takes time. When I began this endeavor, I never realized the numerous strategies involved in affiliate marketing. I was simply sending paid traffic into a landing page. It never worked for me through that strategy.
Now that I’m doing email marketing, I’m starting to see growth with emails. Still, it takes time, but at least the list is growing.
No matter what, you need discipline for sure. It doesn’t happen overnight!
