Starting a WordPress Website for Less than $100

Starting my First WordPress website for less than $100Few days back I was interviewed by Zac Johnson on his blog Bloggingtips.com here and one of question that he asked me was, if I had just $100 to start a blog, how I will do that? No doubt, I had replied to that question during the interview, but I want to give a much detailed answer to that question today. It’s not me, but you could also get into a situation when you want to start a truly professional website, but you have limited budget like $100.

Without wasting much of your time, let me discuss the whole process that I will be doing to start a full fledged website from scratch:

Buying the Hosting and Domain Name

First of all, I will decide the domain name for my website and then I will go to Bluehost.com website to buy the domain name and hosting for my blog. When I’m buying the hosting account from Bluehost, I will be blessed with a free domain name for one year. So with Bluehost, I’m getting domain name for free and thus I have to pay for hosting only. I will need to pay $4.95/month.

So it will cost me $4.95×12 = $59.4 for one year of hosting (with free domain name) with Bluehost.

Reasons for Choosing Bluehost Over Others

I’m interested in starting my blog on WordPress as it is the most powerful content management system on internet for creating truly professional websites and blogs. I had done lots of research work with the intention to find the best web host for my blog. Here are some reasons which motivated me to choose Bluehost over other web hosts in the industry:

Recommended by WordPress.org

Bluehost is recommended as the best web host for Hosting WordPress blogs by WordPress.org website here among thousands of web hosts on the internet.

One Click WordPress Installation

There are very few web hosts in the industry which is giving me one click WordPress installation facility. It is really useful for me as I don’t want to get into the headache of manually installing WordPress on my hosting account.

Can Host Multiple Websites from the Same Hosting Account

By paying $59.95 for year of hosting, I can not only host one website on Bluehost hosting, but also can also host websites that I own or even my friends.

Free CloudFlare CDN

Bluehost recently partnered with Cloudflare to offer their CDN services for free to all of its web hosting customers. Since website speed is now one of rankings factor on Google, I want my website to be really fast so that I had an edge over websites in my niche when it comes about getting better rankings on Google and other search engines.

Apart from these 5 big benefits, I’m going to enjoy all benefits one can expect in a good web host like:

  • Any time money back guarantee
  • 24×7 support through email, chat and phone
  • Unlimited email accounts
  • Free website builder with templates
  • One free domain name for one year
  • Can host unlimited websites

WordPress Installation

After buying the hosting from Bluehost, It would not take more than 5 minutes for me in installing WordPress on my blog using the one click installer facility. You can easily install it following the video manual from Bluehost team below:

Next Buying a Premium WordPress Theme

Next thing, I will purchase a premium WordPress theme for my blog. I will go for Elegant Themes specially keeping in mind the kind of budget I have. I will need to make a one –time payment of $69 for using any of 87 plus premium themes from Elegant Themes gallery.

Best thing amount Elegant themes is that I can customize most of things from my end and I won’t need to hire a developer to customize my theme like other premium themes like Thesis or Genesis.

So cost for buying premium theme will be $69.

That’s all, I need to buy in order to start a truly professional blog on WordPress. This way I will be spending a bit more than $100, $128.4 to be exact ($59.4+$69).

Note: Amount from starting a WordPress website increased from $100 to $128.4 due to increase in Elegant Themes pricing which went from $39 to $69. For $69, they are giving access to all of their 87 plus premium wordpress themes.

Additional Actions I will be Taking

Apart from buying hosting, domain name and premium theme for my blog, I will carry out some other activities which will cost me zero penny and at the same time, will end up making a very search engine friendly website.

I will change my permalink structure from Permalink section under Settings (will chose Custom Structure as /%postname%/)

I will create basic pages like About us, Contact us, Privacy Policy, Disclaimer

I will install the following free WordPress plugins:

After this, it’s just about writing targeted posts and pages around the chosen niche. Once I start receiving traffic on my blog, I will start looking at ways to make money online from my blog. And in case you want to know how much money I’m able to make from my single blog for which I would have made a small investment of $100, check one of recent earnings report for this blog.

  1. I personally prefer not to work with Cloudflare as it sometime fails to deliver content. I have seen customer websites where visitors get an error message even though content is there.

Depending on the niche the blog is built, I might also have a look at other themes. I’ll take a look at themeforest.net and mojo-themes.com.

I’ll install the plugins you mentioned. I’ll also install WordPress SEO, SEO friendly images, backwpup.

  2. This is the 2nd Bluehost article I have come across, I have used Bluehost for years and like their service. I am eager to try out their VPS service when available, however I prefer Incapsula to Cloudflare, like Frank pointed out I had frequent (site unavailable) pages from Cloudflare when my site was available. MaxCDN for caching static content provides better performance pageload boost than Cloudflare or Incapsula alone and is worth investing in too.

Yeah, BlueHost is one of my favorite hosting providers. They provides cheap, and fast hosting service that you should use. However, I prefer to choose Hostgator for Web Hosting. You should to make a try to learn why I said that. 🙂
